Hi, My husband is Level 5 in Marquette. I didn't know that they also had Level 1 up there. I haven't been up to visit as we lost our visits a year ago but hopefully will be getting them back SOON! It is very far for me too, I think about an 11 hour drive. Sorry but that's all I know about it so far!

Good-gracious! That's too many loved ones! I haven't seen anyone mention Southern Michigan yet, but it seems that its really close to Cooper St, and Purnell (sp?)...I usually go on Sunday afternoons.

KB has been moved to Gus Harrison ...which is a good thing because it means theyare finally letting him out of the hole after almost a year. Praise God.

You cover the western part, me the southeast part and Sally gets the Thumb LOL! Hey everyone.

A dear friend of mine (will probably be more, but time will tell :) ) is at Camp Ottawa, Iron River, u.p. of Michigan. I just visited him. He says it's the best place he's been in (level 1) since he was incarcerated 10 years ago (he said he's been in quite a few prisons in MI and one in VA).

The visit was very nice, I could bring 10 dollars in one-dollar bills, I was searched, my ID checked and I had to show the pink slip of the approved visiting form. I wore a jacket with my ID and that slip and had to hang it up in the guards' room where I was searched. Could only bring the $$'s in the visiting area. I'm not sure how strict the dress code is, but I wore normal pants, a t-shirt and sneakers and had no problems. We got the hug and a kiss in the beginning and a long kiss and a hug in the end, could hold hands the whole time. The guards are relaxed and nice. One woman guard had a problem with our knees touching though... and that we didn't sit straight by the table. Guess she thought that would be too "sexy" or something :p

The prison is located near Iron River, a small town. If you're driving west you will turn right where there are a bunch of logs by the side of the road, with saw mill machines. Then you will drive for a few miles until you see a wooden sign with the name of the prison... there you will turn left and drive until you see it. This place is in the middle of nowhere but there's a decent hotel in Iron River just a few miles away from the prison. The night cost $80. I think I saw a cheaper hostel there too in the neighbourhood.

There are 240 prisoners there. There's razor wire around the perimeter, looks a little scary but it seems clean and I guess an ok place for a prison. They operate a sawmill for them to work in inside the fence, but the ones who are coming up for parole get to go outside the gates and work on various things, like clean up the cemetary and stuff like that.

It was wonderful to finally see him :D

p.s. he has told me about one prison in Ionia called the Handlon Michigan Training Unit. It's a level 2, says that 17-26 year-olds are sent there for "disciplinary purposes". He also told me that that's where people learn how to fight, that it's really wild. He's also talked about the Michigan Reformatories (whatever that is?), level 4... that's supposed to be very bad place, people get killed in there :(

His family is in Wayne county and they shipped my brother out to Oaks Correctional Facility - Eastlake, MI (Manistee) this past Thursday.
I haven't quite figured out the actual distance yet, but it's probably going to be at least a 5 hour drive each way.
I love him to pieces and I'll find a way to get out there as often as possible, but why do they have to make it so darn hard?!

Eligable for parole as early as May of next yr. Keepin' our fingers crossed. . .

He started at Reception, then to Saginaw, then to Cooper Street and now to Camp Cusino. Doesn't MDOC know gas is to high to keep moving our men??????????
