My son has a ILP (Individual Learning Plan) that states he gets help in studing, testing, until he's 21 to get his high school education or equalivilate and consoling with social skills. He is currently at Lancaster in lockdown for fighting (social skill?).
I taked with Ass. (opps forgot the"t") Warden and he informed me my son would not get to take his GED becuase of fighting. He also informed me my son was a manipulator (suprise! what kid isn't!) and a fighter (duh, he has to he's in prison...if someone swings on you you swing back that's how it works! He's sorry he broke the kids arm.)
The Education Department at Lancaster has a copy of his ILP, it's on file. Sorry , maybe I'm wrong, but isn't this denying him his education?! Help! Who do I talk to? The next tests are given May 20 & 21st, these will be the last ones given before he gets out! I want him to have his GED when he leaves! Life will be hard enough to adjust to when he gets out.
I'm sure he's ready for the tests. His scores are one of the highest on the compound for the Advanced Pre Ged test.
Please give me some direction. Thanks. Cheryl

Inmates with disipline chronos (fighting) simply are too volatile to place in a classroom/testing situation. (You might want to think about this "kid", who is serving adult time. You aren't doing him any favors by trivilizing his behavior). The prison isn't denying him an education; his actions are. I am sure this ins't what you want to hear, but that's the way it is.

i have to agree with misskatie. my son and stepson both had to go and they never had to swing on somebody. he needs to be held accountable for his actions and accept the consequences. if he doesn't learn that now, he's going to be in more trouble later.

This thread was started back in 2003, I am sure the situation was resolved by now. Hopefully, anyway.

I have three pen-pals I tutor by mail-- two for GED one in his college courses. The two for GED because they were denied to take even a class much less a test ( they will be taking the test upon discharge which is not extremly far off for both of them) -- One was actually able to get his hands on a fairly recent GED book-- the other I had to purchase one on-line and have sent in--- for both I had to send them dictionarys.
My college student was coming along beautifully until they transferred him-- he was offered a a full scholarship for a state school by correspondence and forced to turn it down because the institution refused to admisister the tests-- they had someone there qualified to do so-- she just said she didnt have the time.
Keep in mind these are all either short term offenders or offenders within a year of discharge at this point-- you would think as a society these institutions would promote education rather than standing in it's way. As citizens we should be outraged--they will be getting out either way-
would you prefer them to have an education and a chance or them to have sat there doing nothing and learning more ways to get in trouble?
It makes no sense to me-- personally I would prefer the one who received some sort of education or vocational training-- it's sad many facilities don't see it the same way! Best of luck to your son tell him not to give up!
oops now I see this is a really old thread!--- hopefully it was resolved - however I think this issue is still realvant.

Please tell me what genious decided that it would be appropriate, beneficial and helpful to remove education as a punishment to unacceptable behavior?!?!?!
When I read about things like this I just become infuriated! I can understand that some guys behavior may require a different setting for educational instructional; but without education they are doomed to remain where they are or continue to re-enter the correctional system. UGH!!!

Just my two cents...

The same genius who stopped me from tutoring my 'college' student in Latin because it was not an approved 'foreign language'
