Just wanted to quote from Floridas UCI...
"Offenders, except those in administrative confinement, disciplinary confinement, close management or on death row are allowed to make collect telephone calls."
I am new to this.. why can't DR prisoners make phone calls?

My guess is they would say it is a security risk
Several States DR are allowed to make phone calls. Texas is not allowed phone calls either. Well they say every 90 days they can put in a request for a 5 minute phone call. But I know people who have been waiting a couple years for that 5 minute phone call.
My guess is to punish them as much as they can I guess they figure they are on DR they don't need to keep in touch with their loved ones. I really don't know the answer I only know my opinion, most of which I can put here, because it isn't very nice.
I do know it sucks.....

Hi!
Hallo to everyone at PTO :o)
I'm at little confused here - maybe some of you can help me.
I have a penpal on Polunsky DR - and he tells me that they are not allowed to use the phone ever.
Is that correct?
Thank you.

Polunsky are now allowed to make one 5 minute phone call every 90 days. But it is a joke because they don't get them. All of Texas is that way, but no one hardly ever gets them and just recently they said they were going to allow DR to get them. Well they don't get them, there is always some excuse.
They aren't private phone calls either, they are on a speaker phone so everyone can hear. You have to put in a request for the phone call and you have to be on the person visiting list. And then the phone call has to be approved and chances are you won't get it.
So you might as well say that there aren't any phone calls allowed. Even though they tell you they are.

Hi!
Thank you for your help - my friend's on DR - so that's probably the reason. :o)
Florida, they dont allow personal calls unless it is legal, or they are in county jail.
As Softie said, in TX, its 90 days for 5 minutes, with someone listening in, and they are not allowed to mention needs, such as.... Im broke, did you send that book? (those kind of questions), its general chit chat, and when the time is up, well its up. I have been fortunate enough to be able to recieve those calls, the last call though from Polunsky took more than 90 days, and he wrote alot of complaints about not getting his phone call. They changed it to a few every Saturday night, and you can imagine, with everyone on level one wanting to make a phone call, and those 90 days going very fast, when a majority havent had one yet. And you do need to be on their visiting list, so if you are just a pal, that isnt on the list, they will not allow the call.

My husband is in San Quentin and they are allowed to use a phone. I am using PCO and it works great. He can call me as many 15 minutes as he wants. so sometimes, when money is on the account we talk for 2-3 hours with an interruption every 15 minutes ;) . The phonecalls get recorded, so this is their security. But there was never a problem, even if complaining about DR.

Nevada DR phone calls are 15 minutes, a few times a week (if you can afford it). a recording interrupts saying the calls are monitored but we talk freely and have never had a problem. After reading the other posts, I will never complain about the short 15 minutes again.
