My husband was discussing some of the criteria of how they will be classifying inmates. Has your loved one mentioned the new system yet?

I'm not sure when it will go into effect or all of the details, I will be doing some research on this and hopefully will have more details in the near future.

If you have any information you would like to share please post here.

Thanks in advance
Mel

Hey Mel, Mikey and I were talking about this a few months ago and we think it will be a good change for DOC. It is supposed to be modeled after California's system, and make it easier for inmates with good behavior and classes, jobs, etc to have their scores dropped, based on their actions rather than meeting a certain time frame.

I think that is a wonderful plan, because my husband has been the same score for over 11 years because of their goofy classification system here! It (in theory) will reward the people by lowering their scores, when they display that they have earned it. The current system is terribly outdated and someone can be ticket free forever, and still have to wait 2 years between each level. just my :twocents:. :) -Aimee

Hey there Aimee thanks for the input, ya know we had discussed it awhile back but never really went into detail about it. And then last night he mentioned it again. Do you know when it is supposed to go into effect?

I'm really curious to find out more details...if you here anything else let me know.

Thanks
Mel

youre welcome :D. i wonder when we will know more about it, and when they will actually start re-doing peoples reclasses. december is not far away, and it seems that this could potentially affect alot of people, especially if they do away with the zero tolerance and the 2 year wait period between scores. they keep us wondering....

Aimee, I'm not sure and either was Mikey, he goes to reclass on the 21st of this month so hopefully he can ask questions then. Maybe sooner than that it seems they always reclass a few weeks early.

It sounds like it could have it's positives and negatives, but you know how things can get carried away in there and the information that is passed down through the inmates may not always be the correct information.

Hopefully we'll hear something soon!

My husband was reclassed on the 16th of August. Originally they told him that he would be moved to a 3 yard after this reclass. He says that there are guys on the 4 yard that have reclassed for months now and not moved. The COIII says that the "New Classification System" is going to effect where he goes and when the Inmates come home! TR's are going to be effected! Anyone have details on what the real is on it all?

From what I can gather classification will be based on the needs of the inmate, reclass will show if those needs have been or are being met. Not really that much different from the present system, it's still program, program, program. I also learned it will go into effect the end of next January. No one is too excited about it.

Thanks for the information Limey.

Rebelswife~.....at this point I don't know what to tell ya, my husband is in a out of state facility and was reclassed to a 2(6 months ago), and once again he is up for reclass on the 21st of this month so.....when he will get transferred to another yard I have no clue. They say he has been approved for Winslow, but like I said that was 6 months ago.

The way I see it is they are still moving inmates to different facilities, with all the movements and the new reclass system, I guess they have a bigger picture...I just haven't figured it out yet. LOL

I wish I had some info for you I just don't...Good Luck to you and yours and I hope we can all get the information we are looking for soon.

THIS INFORMATION PROVIDED BY A VERY TRUSTED SOURCE DONNA HAMM WITH MIDDLE GROUND PRISON REFORM

The new classification system is a result of the Lewis prison
hostage situation, and it much more "conservative" than the one that was in
place prior to the hostage events. Basically, without going into a
full-blown treatise, the new classification system treats violent offenders
and those who were designated non-dangerous, but used weapons in the
commission of their crime, as higher security risks. So, since he used
a weapon in the commission of this crime, he will be treated as a higher
security risk than someone who, for example, was convicted of fraudulent
schemes against a bank or something. Inmates have no constitutional right
to be classified in a certain way and no constitutional right to be located
in a prison unit or custody level of their own choosing.

As to how the new classification system might or could affect his ERC Date,
I don't believe it will. As long as he stays out of trouble --
disciplinary-wise -- he should still be able to be released on his ERC.
However, he should ask his CPO for a clarification or send a Kite to the
time computation unit at the Central Office and ask them if the date will be
altered in any way as a result of the new classification system.

Rebelswife~I've sent Donna a e-mail a time or two myself...she's always been very helpful. I know my husband was going to try and get into the counselors office this week...hopefully he will get more info when he goes to re-class. Let's all just stick together on this and post any new info we get until ADC decides to put something up on the website.

I've defenitley heard the pros and cons, my question is though with the new system it sounds as if it has to do alot with the crime commited. So will everyone be starting from scratch again, surely they can't take away their minumum status and now put them on a medium yard and so on...I just don't know I don't have all the details yet. Still doing research.....((sigh))

I just spoke with classification and it will be going statewide in October, she wasn't sure how this is going to affect our loved ones, she said it will be one number only and is supposed to be easier for both inmates and the families to understand. She also said she couldn't say for sure if this would effect release dates and how it will affect what they are classified as now.

She said that they will be updating the website but she wasn't sure when and that all inmates would be getting a packet informing them of the new system. So that's all I have for now and I hope this helps somewhat.

More information from ADOC and the Effective date for the System to be active.

While a new classification system is being processed, I am not at liberty to discuss it until it has been implemented. It is anticipated that it will be in place by next month, October, 2005.

Again, thank you for your inquiry. Please let me know if I may provide further assistance.

Is it likely that my son will still be in the same facility at Thanksgiving or will the new classification system change that?

Njtexas, it's hard to say at this point. There's been alot of talk about how exactly they will classify the guys with the new system, but my husband got a packet on it and as Mel said, it sounds like their crime has alot to do with where they will be moved. So I am wondering if my husband will be moved, too. Hopefully these changes will be better for the guys, not worse. Hard to say at this point...guess we'll have to wait and see what DOC has up their sleeve.

When was he reclassed and what is his Counselor saying? Is he on a 3 or 4 yard?

Rebelswife

I don't think much of DOC and them caring whether or not the guys are good or in a bad position. Prison to them is supposed to be like hell, problem is only few far and in between learn and don't go back, all others don't care and rage like they are pushed to do.
