View Full Version : Moving to South Carolina and curious
nh boy 09-16-2005, 09:17 PM Hay Every One! How Are You All? I Have A Question? Is Anyone Out There From South Carolina? I Am Moving There In December! Im Just Curious To Hear Any Thoughts About South Carolina. Thanks All. Rick OH ILL BE MOVING TO SPARTENBURG
jessnkat 09-17-2005, 10:09 AM Hey Rick! I've moved this to the South Carolina forum where you will get better response.
Good luck with the move!!
Of course there are people from SC - SC locks people up just like the rest of the country. ;-) We recently won the award of spending less per inmate than any other state too.
I'm in Columbia - dead center of the state.
Kahlan 09-17-2005, 09:55 PM Hi Rick. What is bringing you to South Carolina? Spartanburg is nice. I've lived in Greenville and loved living there. The upstate is a very pretty area with lots of things to do.
A few tips about southernisms. You can say "Hey" but it's not usually written. Same with ya'll. You can say it but don't write it unless you are writing a novel.
I think that you'll like living here.
NO! I write both of those all the time in personal stuff! How uncool of me. I start all of my letters to my Pal with "Hey M.," too and Ithink I've used "y'all" right here at PTO.
Wonder what he'll think of boiled p'nuts............
Kahlan 09-18-2005, 10:25 AM Lol! I confess. I do it too. :)
I just read that in a southern writing tips article at work last week. I don't think that I can stick to it either. "Hey, ya'll" is just too natural for this southern girl. :p
Maybe we could practice say "yous guys"? I say "hey" with my pal 'cause I thought "Dear" sound too chummy; he has laughed at me 'cause I used "tad bit".
Kahlan 09-19-2005, 10:35 AM My favorite recipe from an older family member ends with "makes a right good many". I love it!
Aaaahhhhh..... I say that too! ;-(
nh boy 09-19-2005, 09:35 PM hay ya,ll" are a hoot!i guess im just wondering if ill fit in there.and meet new friends or be shund because of my northernness! lol. if ill have trouble finding a place to live? well im tired of the snow and cold hear and the people! i find the people hear are fairly cold . so the co. i work for has a small plant out there in spartenburg,ya,ll" may know it by its old name ((J.B.L.))? ANY WAY I ASKED ABOUT POTENTAL JOBS THERE AND THEY HAVE 5 AND I WOULD BE ABLE TO KEEP MY BENIFITS ,VAC. 401K SENORITY+ SUCH. RICK
Kahlan 09-20-2005, 10:50 AM Rick, Come on down! SC is a friendly place. The Greenville/Spartanburg area has many international companies so you won't stick out as a northerner. One tip though - when it snows, enjoy your day or days off and don't say anything about how they cleared the roads faster up north. Those are fightin' words around here. Other than that, you should have lots of friends and fun in the sunny south.
As for real estate - some of our upstate members may know...
OMG!!!! He used the "s" word!!! ;-(
And just for the record we don't call y'all northerners - we call ya Yankees. Or at least that is what I say, but then I'm wasn't born and raised here either.
Kahlan 09-20-2005, 01:29 PM Yep, we say "Yankee". I've never heard anyone called a northerner.
I hesitate to type that though because I used the word in another post and got an e-mail that someone was offended by the word. But hey, here in the south, anyone from the north is a Yankee. How the word is taken depends on if you're a nice Yankee or a D*%n Yankee. (apologies to the offended)
SCDC Mom 09-20-2005, 01:35 PM LOL Hi Rick! I am from the upstate of SC. Actually a "little ways down" from Greenville and a "hop and skip" from Spartanburg. I have heard the name JBL. Isn't that a trucking company?
Come on down. We'll welcome you right on in.
Barb
Well, I am a native of California and get called a Yankee all the time 'cause some people think I talk funny.
Kahlan 09-20-2005, 07:23 PM ajap! :p
Rick, who do you have in prison? Where are they?
kittylitter 09-20-2005, 07:29 PM Hi y'all :) I moved to SC about 6 months ago, from up north. Let me first warn you - it's quite a transition. About anything and everything that could be different, is. But I do love the weather. I'm having trouble slowing down to the pace of life here, but that's what we moved for.
My brother gave me the first SC language lesson: "y'all" is singular; "all y'all" is plural! And something I'm learning this fall - football rules the place. I've never seen such a vacuum out in the area as when USC has a game! Good time to shop if you're not a football fan (but don't ever say that to anyone).
nh boy 09-20-2005, 09:27 PM oh,man so much to learn!!! thats funny about the snow:) i can just picture myself being the only one to show up for work!! ahhhh!!! foot ball. well no my co. jbl is a manufacturing co. for medical electronics! i wont know too much about the co untill i interview next thursday! oh by the way is there a local watering hole in spartenburg that may have a band on fri.+ sat?? or would i be looking for trouble showing up at a local bar? being a yankee:( its nice to hear that ya,ll are friendly. well its a long story but i had a pen pal in prison in texas but found out she was just playing me:mad: she actually had a girl friend in there and they were both profiting from me generosity!! but now im just a care free singal guy!!:D thats why im doing this move no responsabilitys hear in new england. so i figured if i was ever going to do anything like this now is the time. hay anyone know where i may find a house to rent where they may not be so fussy about my credit? anyone interested :p sorry just kidding lol. any help steering me towards a house for rent would be a major help thanks. rick
nh boy 09-21-2005, 12:26 AM just curious? as a singal 49 year old guy will i have trouble meeting woman out there in spartenburg? is it out in the stix or is it a big city?also i have heard that its not a good idea for me to go up into the mountains? rick
SCDC Mom 09-21-2005, 05:22 AM It's a fairly good sized city. I don't think you'll have any problems meeting women in churches, bars or whereever you decide to try.
nh boy 09-22-2005, 12:54 AM thank you everyone for all the great info:) hay any one know if there is any bad neaborhoods that i should stay away from when i start looking for apartments? ill be looking in spartenburg AND GREENVILLE THANKS RICK
SCDC Mom 09-22-2005, 09:21 AM Just in my opinion stay away from West Greenville. It is a high crime area. I'm sure that there are other areas that I don't know about but that one is the first area that "comes to mind". (Another southern phrase???)
joshsmom221 09-23-2005, 11:45 PM Well darn. I just learned you can't back up to a previous page to confirm a name. I had me a good little post going too!
Rick, you've got some wrong ideas about the south it seems to me. Don't y'all have mountains where you are from? Well, they're the same here. Beautiful and very close to Spartan burg. You will meet women. We make up about 50% of the population around here. I suspect that's true where you're from also. And we represent all makes and models. Some are lounge lizards and some are church ladies and there's all in between too! I'm sure you'll find one to your liking. You won't have any problems finding a waterhole. Unfortunately, they are everywhere. Now, about the snow. You have been warned! And they weren't joking. As soon as the weather dude or duddette starts talking about the possibility of snow every citizen will become glued to their radio/tv. By the time the 1st snowflake falls every bit of food will be stripped from every grocery and convenience store. And if there's even the rumor - your friend's mama's cousin twice removed - that snow is coming every battery, flashlight, propane heater, etc. will be stripped from every hardware store. By the time the 10th snowflake falls every school, business, church and public building will be closed. But, before you laugh so hard you pee your pants understand there is a reason. We don't have many snow removal resources. Up north it snows - period. Around these parts it's snow mixed with ice or freezing rain. The roads freeze with ice and then the snow accumulates over it. Most people around here don't see a need for sleds. We use trash can lids or inter tubes saved from trips to the river in the summer. Learn from the locals. You will be driving on ice - not snow. And besides you will be driving on roads where your road mates are, shall we say, smartness impaired. You might know how to drive on ice and snow but most of us don't. You really don't want to meet us on a snow/ice covered road! You might want to get yourself a truck. They are very popular around here - especially for single guys. I suspect you are going to fit in just fine. BTW, Spartanburg/Greenville is home to several international companies and they have employees from all over the world. South Carolina is become quite popular with folks from up north who are retiring. Less crowded and less expensive than Florida but better winters than you are used to. I am a native but I lived 23 years traveling with my husband when he was in the Army. The hardest thing for me to get re-used to is the weather in the winter. Christmas may be with 2 foot of snow/ice or 80 and kids screaming for shorts and to go barefoot. Very unpredictable weather. Here's some words for you to practice on.
Fixin' - means getting ready to. As in, I'm fixin' to start supper (dinner).
Yonder - oh, this one is gonna kill ya. It even drives some southerners insane. It is used as in - The box is over yonder. Thankfully this is usually used with a wave of the hand to show you the direction of yonder. You may not shoot people who use yonder when you ask for directions. Just smile, walk away and take a Valium!
Now, about the football. Kittylitter has been here only 6 months so she ain't seen nothing yet. If you're moving to Spartanburg then you'll get into the Clemson/USC mess. They take school rivalry to new heights. People actually get into fist fights over which school is the best. Most of it is in fun though. One year Clemson students painted giant orange tiger paws (school mascot is a tiger) every so many yards on the interstate from Clemson to Columbia (USC). I'm sure USC students have pulled many tricks also but I laugh at the Clemson ones because .... you got it, my husband is a Clemson fan and graduated from their ROTC program. They play each other every year - last game of the regular season I think and all you'll hear about for 6 months will be how great the game will be or how great it was and how the other team cheated.
Well, that's enough to get you started. I hope your interview goes just fine. You seem like a carefree, easy going guy. You must be from the southern part of your state! hehehe
Sherrie (who lives in Columbia)
nh boy 09-26-2005, 10:41 PM Johns mom thanks so much for all your info:) i hope you didnt get the wrong idea about me and bars i was looking more for a country western club? not a bar, bar!! you know thats exactly what i was thinking driving in the snow!! but i think ill follow the locals and stay at home! i only ask about the woman there because i have heard you all are very friendly, compaired to the woman hear in newhampshire they are very cold hear. and after getting divorced after 20 years of marrage i just dont know where to turn other than a club.it sounds like spartenburg is a bigger city? i was hoping to get out in the country. yes there is moubntains hear but i need to go about a 2 hour ride to see any kind of country. i guess i find out when i get there thursday:) i am just worried about finding an apt,or house to rent because of my credit. i was looking at a place called THE PLACE but they seem very picky about credit. and are asking for 3 months rent in advance $1800.00 i was hoping to get a place cheaper. any way thanks again. RICK OH BY THE WAY IF THE WOMAN THERE IN S.C ARE ANYTHING LIKE YOU I THINK ILL HAVE NO PROBLEM FITTING IN LOL
Marchio1948 09-29-2005, 10:07 PM I am a native a Mass.I moved here 35 years ago.I guess I consider myself a southerner.All my family still up North.
Talked to my Aunt the other day on the phone and told her I was "fixin" to build a porch on to the house, she said,Di you need to come home to your roots, you sound like a southerner,I told her I am HOME
anonymous-in-sc 10-04-2005, 04:59 PM How funny. I call people from the north "Northerners". I'm often mistaken for a Californian because of the way that I speak.
Terrysgurl 10-04-2005, 07:02 PM I am originally from Michigan but LOVE the south now! I am cracking up over the posts cause what they say is SOO true...What I say that makes my "up north" friends cringe is fittn to...Variation of fixin...Example-I'm fittn to make dinner...Also we don't have pop here...Its coke (for every kind of soft drink) or soda...Where do you plan of staying until you find an apt??? I wish I could help you with some info but I'm not familiar with rental properties...Best of luck to you...I am soooo happy I moved here and know you will too!
nh boy 10-04-2005, 10:10 PM hay,hay ya,ll it is officiall im a movin the last week of oct, WOO!HOO! ill be living in greenville! man ya,ll are right it was a culture shock! i spent the last 4 days in S.C. I ENJOYED THE PEOPLE REAL FRIENDLY, but alot of them could not understand me because of my northern accent! lol.boy ya,ll are realy into nascar, football, and church arnt you! i think ill be loanly for awile though not knowing anyone! but i guess ill get used to it. any thoughts on greenville would be much appreceated! rick
SCDC Mom 10-05-2005, 10:58 AM I really like Brookwood Community Church in Simpsonville. It is informal and non-denominational. Also huge and a great way to meet good people. I don't go there but would if it weren't for my hubby. (He's a Southern Baptist Minister.) Learn to love football. It's a great conversation starter here. I can't stand football but still have a great time tailgating. Watch out for the Clemson/Carolina rivalry. It is fierce.
Watch out for some of the redneck bars. They are trouble waiting to happen. I'm sure you'll do fine. Ask around where you will be working. I'm sure you'll get lots of free advice.
Good luck
Barb
JamiesFeatherwood 10-06-2005, 02:15 AM lets not forget in the south it is called a "hosepipe" not a "gradenhose" and the kids play in the "creek" not the "crick" im married to one them thar yankees and he drives me crazy trying to correct my vocabulary lol
summer86 01-12-2006, 10:55 PM this is from a northern girl who lived down south and is back up north.
I have read your post from back in october and truely had some laughter. I hear your comments and concerns about moving south and being a "Northern boy" but then I also see the comments from people that live down south and they are pretty true to what they say. I can only tell you that what they are saying is very close to the truth- because I was that girl that went through the northern - southern transformation.
I see that you lived in londonderry, nh - well i am originally from amesbury ma. I understand your comments, fear and situation of moving down south. I chose to move to North Carolina and traveled to visit my husband (originally from NH/MA) in south carolina. It is a wonderful area - down south. Everything they posted about the snow, bars and your "yankee" accent is true. I was known as a "damn yankee" because a "yankee" is a vistor - a "damn yankee" stays and ends up living there. (not always is a damn yankee a bad term- you just have to adjust to their way of life and vocabulary) and forget everything you learned up here and all your anger from up north. You will become adjust to it over time. How many times have they asked you to say car? or Caahh- have you said wicked cool yet? that will get them every time. how about the grocery store carts? (Caahts) they call them buggies? what is that all about- a buggie is a volswagen or a Bug (insect) to us... it is fun figuring out the language but be patient!
I am so adjusted to living down south that for me moving back is hard to deal with being a "true new englander" but I understand this is the way life is up here in the "great" new england. People are not nice- but what I learned from living down south is that I try to instill to these cold mean new england people- is that- I say hello to people coming in and out of the grocery store - and wave (not the on finger wave either). It is a chore coming back home to new england but for me i am sure i will probably end up in NH or NC soon. I wish you all the best- from one new englander to another. I loved living in the south and I am sure you will too. But if you don't you will soon figure out that either you are a northern boy or a southern boy... we all end up missing "home".
jceebrz 01-29-2006, 06:33 PM Welcome to South Carolina Rick. You will find plenty to do in Greenville as Spartanburg is a little smaller town. Oh and Spartanburg is nicknamed sparkle city. I don't know why. Oh and always make sure that you get to the grocery store and but milk and bread if there is any bit of gossip of bad weather a comin.
moniqueSC 01-29-2006, 08:27 PM Welcome to SC, Rick. I live in Greenville, but get out to Spartanburg at least 3 times a month with work. I like it there and I'm sure you will too. :)
That is too true about milk and bread with bad weather; I lived in the Rockies for several years and finally a friend asked my WHY every time a sotrm was predicted I raced to buy milk and bread. After I explained to her about the power going out she pointed out that ALL power lines where we lived were underground. Phone lines too. Never ever once did I have a power outage, but never the less if snow was coming I DID have milk and bread.
Marchio1948 02-23-2006, 08:25 PM I am in Leesville,SC,but closer to Pelion.SC is a good place to live.
WELCOME
