I guess this is an odd hobby for a woman, though I have met two other women that love the hobby besides my sister and I.

I build model ships, of all periods.

Dad so wanted a boy, he got five girls, so he compromised he taught us all how to build model ships.

Only I and one sister have kept up the hobby, but we work in different mediums. She builds plank on frame kits, and scratch builds model sailing ships.

I prefer resin kits of late 19th century ships to present and when I need something easy I still build plastic kits.

My two current projects are plastic though I am looking for resin kits of both vessels.

SMS Konig a battleship of the Imperial German Navy that my Grandfather was a Gunnery Officer on and the KMS Admiral Sheer. My Dad was stationed on the Sheer in the mid 1930s. I am building both kits for Dad.

I also sail and restore sailboats. My ex-husband and I restored a 1932 two master in the late 1970s and early 1980s that was my favorite boat, but I no longer own her, I hope to buy her back early next year.

Patti,
Wow... I just came across this thread after spending some time checking out a forum about this topic earlier today.. Take a look at this community.. This person has done great work with his vBulletin setup... Totally loaded out. We'll have some of these features soon as well, but if your into model ships, this place rocks.. ;)

FED-X - all I can say is awesome! What a wonderful site!

I called my sister in Kiel (Germany) after I looked around the site - she hoped in there and now we have a place to share our hobby with others and each other! Thousands of miles apart yet so close, I love it!

Thank You!

I want to show part of my hobby and passion.

I had almost forgotten about this photo of our boat "Lazy Day". It is my favorite photo of her. I hope I can load it right. It is already somewhere on PTO in the gallery, but I could not find it last night. This photo was taken in my home town just after we had relaunched her. The Champagne had hardly dried off her bows - and we were still feeling the after effects of the second bottle!

This is the boat that my ex and I restored, took us nearly ten years to do it, and we had to learn many new skills to finish her. But it was worth every minute, every cut and scrape and cuss word or tear (on my part) when we got frustated when something did not work out and we had to redo it. We worked on her at night after work and lots of weekends. Alot of blood, sweat and tears in that boat, and most importantly our spirit is the spirit of our boat.

George and I could not make our marriage work but our love for each other, and our friendship - to this day - is the spirit of our boat - the spirit we gave her during her rebuild and sailing her after wards.

I had to sell my share of Lazy Day to George to help pay my lawyers, another chapter of our boat's life and of our lives.

George and his new wife gave me the a wonderful gift on my last birthday - September 23rd. They had moved here in June for a new job, and brought Lazy Day back to Hampton Roads - when they listed the owners on the new title - it listed: George F. and Patricia F. I cried.

Our boat is ours again and we are sailing again - one old family - two new families: George and Judy, Linda and Patti - sharing life, friendship, and love for all.

Have you ever built a boat inside of a bottle?
I think that those are very cool!

I have got to the point of putting it in the bottle, but I never could get it right when I pulled the one string that you leave threaded through the neck of the bottle to pull the masts upright. Tried it several times but could never get it right. The masts remain lowered to this day.

A fellow sailor/model builder is doing a model of "Lazy Day" our boat, now. But not for the bottle it will be in a case at our local yacht club, it is the oldest boat and the fastest in the club and they wanted a model to put in the clubs collection of noted boats in the club.

We got the honor this year. George and I are just such a good team and willing to take chances that others arn't - because we know our boat and each other's abilities.

That is amazing, Patti, even with lowered sails.
It just looks like magic to me.
