View Full Version : Chatters - Please Read
mrsdragoness 09-13-2005, 08:45 AM Hello Everyone,
I'd like to address a couple of things I'm seeing and hearing about regarding our chat room. It seems that lately chat has been a little out of control.
Frst of all.. if you are not aware of the PTO Rules/Policies, you should be. Those Rules follow into the chat room as well as the Forums. PTO Rules/Policies (http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23755)
When members enter the chat room, it is expected that you conduct yourself according to our policies. While we realize that most folks go to chat to have fun, there is no reason why you can't have fun and follow the rules at the same time! It CAN be done!
Please remember that inappropriate language is not allowed in the chat room. Personally I swear like a drunken Marine, but the chat room is NOT the place for it.
Staff in the Chat Room - Staff come into the chat room for 2 reasons, either to lead a topic chat OR to simply let their hair down and have some fun just like YOU! However, when we become staff here on PTO we agree to uphold the rules as well so if we are doing some moderating while there its because we are doing what is expected of us as PTO Staff!
It disturbs me that when staff come into the room, we hear remarks like "oh we have to change the subject now" or "heads-up the PTO Police are here." If everyone were following the rules in the first place, there should be no reason for remarks like that to be made! ;)
Sub-Rooms/Chat: The sub rooms are there for topic chats as well as private conversations. PLEASE be aware when you decide to have a private chat you STILL are expected to follow the rules! If you and a few friends want to talk privately, set up your own sub room and get away from the other chatters. If you want to, set up some "rules" for your own private chat - as long as they stay within PTO Guidelines! ;) Tell everyone in your private chat.. no swearing, no talking about sex (or lack of), this is our chat. Password protect it so only those you want to talk to are there...however, if staff pop in please be aware they are simply there to participate or they are "doing their job." ;)
We (PTO Staff) want you to be able to go to the chat room and vent, have fun, cry, reach out or ask for a hug. So lets all try to get our chat room back on track so that is happening!
Your cooperation will be appreciated!

MrsBenji 09-13-2005, 09:34 AM GREAT post Mrs D!!
I know there are plenty of times that I want to go chat and just hang out. And I do... but it's icky when I have to "interrupt" the fun I'm having to remind someone else of policies...
Jenn
April07 09-13-2005, 01:57 PM Thanks for the reminder MrsD. I am usually only on in the afternoon - but occasionally my 13 year old son reads over my shoulder. I am VERY glad that 99% of the time, it's entirely appropriate discussion for him :)
Lillybee 09-13-2005, 04:00 PM Thanks Mrs. D.
California Sunshine 09-14-2005, 11:37 AM I just wanted to add that I go to chat because I enjoy it.I'm not there to bust anyone at all (however I must keep the policies in mind while there) I am there to have fun,be around people I enjoy and take my mind off my troubles which chat and you all do for me :)
MrsBenji 09-14-2005, 11:48 AM Yeah.. I'm with you Cali.. and sometimes, it's a matter of... If I have to behave, so do they, darn it!

tmhill 10-16-2005, 05:38 PM Hello-I am not a person that uses poor language often so I actually appreciate the rules and guidelines. However, this is only the second time I have posted a message and therefore I am unable to go to chat it appears. I would just like to point out that I feel that is a very unfortunate rule. My son was sentenced to prison on Friday. He may be transported on his 21st birthday. I found this web site and have been reading and gaining so much knowledge since noon today. That's 6 1/2 hours. I feel so broken hearted and truthfully loney tonight. I was pleased to find the chat room just to talk to others that have experienced this since of loss. I think it is a shame that at a moment when I could really use this support I don't meet a minimum post rule and time requirement. I think this site is amazing and am very grateful it is here. Thanks- Tina

MrsBenji 02-09-2006, 03:53 PM Hiya BridetoBe!
Have you read this thread??
http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147829
It explains the chat requirements a bit more in-depth, and even if you have made 25 posts (it's in the upper right corner of all of your posts--You've made over 50, WOOHOO!) you must also have been a member for 2 full weeks. Since your join date was 1/27, you should be able to get into the chat room (via the link on the top toolbar of the webpage) on 2/11.
Hang in there!!
Jenn
CanadaBound 02-27-2006, 11:31 PM I am not sure how long I have been a member but it has definately been less than two weeks. To date, I have made 13 posts and have benefited from the input from other members...Thank you so much! I can tell you that there have been times when I have felt like I really needed to talk to someone who understands all of this, all that I have been going through for the last 18 months. Unfortunately for me, I just found this site recently so I will respect the rules as set and be patient. I do look forward to the day in which I can "chat" with others experiencing a similiar horror. My man has been in County for the last 18 months up until the beginning of Feb and I never ever thought to look online for support. You have been a fabulous source of information and I am looking forward to getting to know some of you much better. Thank you all so very much.

If you will go to the PTO Index (http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/index.php) page and scroll to the bottom, you'll see forums that are for pen pal ads. You can browse through them by location.
Good luck! Welcome to PTO!

lonelyangel 04-02-2006, 03:38 PM So if you have been a member for over 6 months then you can get in after posting 5 posts. What if you don't come back for a while do you have to post a certain amount again to get back in or not?

Nope, as long as you've been registered for more than 6 months and have 5 posts and you were a member before the new policy was in effect. :)
You should be able to access chat. :)

Jessie,
There are a few options to find out info on your brother. First of all, you can't communicate with inmates on the internet, period.
If you go to www.google.com and search for "California Inmate Locator" you should arrive at the CA DOC's page where you can search inmates.
Here at PTO, if you go to the PTO Index Page (http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/index.php), you can visit our CA forums (which are FULL of information) or our Lost in the System forum where others can help you or advise you on how to access the information.
Hope that helps!

Dghs48 05-11-2006, 02:13 PM I can only imagine the pain of having a son or daughter or wife or husband in prison. I communicate with and visit a man in Angola Prison. He has become almost like a brother to me and the pain of knowing what a controlled life he leads gets to me. My sympathy to all you who have relatives in Prison. There must be a better way than to confine those whose lives can be changed.
tranniegurl 05-15-2006, 03:50 PM I have to say for one I love the chat room and I will be the first to admit that sometimes I may get carried away but no harm is ever meant. I will be sure and pay closer attention to the rules as to ensure that everyone has a pleasent experince.

If you go to the PTO Index Page (http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/index.php), and scroll down, you will see the name of the state where that facility is located. Within that area, I am sure you can find someone who has experience with that specific facility.

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, but very generally speaking, we ask that folks in the chat room behave like adults. No bashing, no spamming, nothing obscene. You can chat just chit-chatty type of stuff, but we still expect everyone to behave like adults. The PTO Chatroom isn't a free-for-all like Yahoo! or other chat rooms.
Hope that helps.
Jenn
I spend alot of time in chat so I'd like to respond to inmateswife:) . We do not intend to disrespect anyone entering the chatroom and will give and share all info. we know about prison stuff. Sometimes when you have been in chat as long as me you get on a personal level with the others in there, we know about each others problems, children and basically just whats going on with them. Like everyone with a loved one in the system we deal with it daily and have our times of crying and being down so when we see others that know what we are going threw and they can take our mind off it even if its 10 minutes we do laugh and talk away from the prison stuff. We are sort of like neighbors and do not intend to make anyone feel uncomfortable. sam

MonkeyBoi77 07-20-2006, 05:48 PM One thing about chat is that sometimes not everyone wants to talk about prison related issues and we do tend to get out of hand and thats why when we see mods its makes alot of us uncomfortable and we feel we cant let down our hair for the fear we will get "told on" and banned, etc. I have been in many times where some members get pissy about us letting our hair down and give rants that this site is about support and not fun, well I am so sorry but there are time we DONT WANT TO TALK ABOUT PRISON and I think there needs to be someway others can make a subroom for people who strictly wanna talk about prison 24/7 cuz I know I don't wanna talk about it 24/7

Most of the time, when I go into chat, I'm looking for some down time, just to chit chat and hang out. And if someone is looking for anything other than very, very basic info, they will ALWAYS have more success looking for info on the boards.
I'm sorry you worry about being told on or banned, but the thing is, most mods and staff members come into chat for the same reasons everyone else: to talk to others who can understand, even if it is just to chit chat a bit. And really, so long as no one is getting way off course, there shouldn't be any worries about being banned or getting some sort of discussion about behavior. And all the guidelines are listed in the PTO policies. They're in place (like language and explicit sexual discussion being areas to avoid) because there are those who are offended and we do have quite a few younger members who shouldn't have to be subjected to a detailed discussion about sexual topics or explicit language. No one deserves to be attacked or bashed either. I'm sure most of the policies are reasonable if put into the context of the wide variety of folks who can and do access the chat room.
Remember, staff members don't want to have to *police* the chat room, but we do want to keep PTO a place that is friendly to anyone who shares our situations. We want the chance to relax and socialize too...

littlesisinTC 07-21-2006, 12:03 PM well hello everyone, i would like to chat as well and i will avoid the drunken sailor talk as well.
littlesisinTC 07-21-2006, 12:06 PM I was kind of wondering if anyone new what pine river correctional facility is like? My brother was just transfered there!
mrsdragoness 07-21-2006, 12:07 PM Hello and welcome to PTO! You will need to be a member for 2 weeks as well as have 25 supportive posts before you have accesss to our chat room... feel free to look around PTO and introduce yourself!
mrsdragoness 07-21-2006, 12:08 PM You'll find lots of Information in our Michigan forum:
http://prisontalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=149
Atalie 07-21-2006, 12:19 PM LittleSis, welcome to PTO! You will find a lot of support here.
MonkeyBoi77 07-21-2006, 03:47 PM Mrs. I understand where you are coming from but its kind of hard to let your hair down when there are certain people who only wanna be serious all the time, and I mean all the time, there is always one person in chat who always wants to talk about prison stuff 24/7 and some of us don't want to, due to the fact we find chat as a relaxation tool and to get away from all seriousness.
Maybe if someone made a room for the serious people who wanna be serious all the time, etc, things can be separated and the tensions wont be so high, just a suggestion.
mrsdragoness 07-21-2006, 04:49 PM Everyone who chats is free to start a sub chat room of their own and invite their friends or those who what to chat on similar topics.
MonkeyBoi77 07-21-2006, 04:51 PM How do u start a sub room of your own?
mrsdragoness 07-21-2006, 05:03 PM in the blue bar where you type what you are saying:
/create (name of the room)
if you want to password protect your room its:
/create (name of the room) (password)
for instance if I were going to create a sub room for dragons I'd type
/create dragons
and if I wanted a password it would be
/create dragons scales
When you create the room you will automatically be taken to it. But, if you are the only one in there and you leave, then it will go away.
And please remember....PTO Rules/Policies follow into private chats as well ;)
MonkeyBoi77 07-21-2006, 06:02 PM oh wow I thought only mods could make a sub room lol
mrsdragoness 07-21-2006, 06:14 PM nope ;) anyone can!!
MonkeyBoi77 07-21-2006, 06:27 PM ohh wooohoo ty much
PattiD1157 07-21-2006, 06:40 PM LOL now you can hide Monkeyboi.....I am sorry if you felt uncomfortable when mods would come in. We are people too. :( Just wanna have fun. Have I made you feel uncomfortable? If so I certainly didn't mean to. Gee I even toss ya bananas silly!!! LOL
MonkeyBoi77 07-21-2006, 06:57 PM no not you Patti, only certain mods, no names lol! I think we all wanna have fun but its kinda hard when ya gotta follow da rules *pokes tongue* but funny thing is that we all break the rules in chat at one point, so its kinda hard to keep total track of everyone who needs punished lmao!
sugarhill 07-21-2006, 07:10 PM lookin forward to being able to get into the chat room :)
MonkeyBoi77 07-21-2006, 07:47 PM I tried it and made a subroom for a test out and it worked

Hang in there!!

donovans wife 07-23-2006, 01:56 PM Hey Im having problems getting into chat I have been here two weeks and I have more than 25 posts and It says I dont have permission to enter the chat room. What do I need to do?
I am not allowed to enter chat room yet, I have been a member since my son was incarcerated in March. However, I have not posted 25 times. I had been jsut browsign and reading - and now I am trying to share information and post supportive thoughts more often, becasue I am veryinterestde in chatting. I am hoping much of the chat is focused on on loved ones in prions, and just supporting each other. You all have been terrific so far. There are not many people who understadn what me and my family are going through. W eiwll never be the same. This has opened my eyes to the unjust world of the judiccial system. THanks for being there. Can't wait the chat.

You will be able to access it after midnight tonight.

You will find TONS of information and support and encouragement on the message boards. The chat room is actually VERY small and it's more of a place to let your hair down and just socialize a bit more than focus on having a loved one inside. You'll have much better success on the boards with things relating to that stuff. Everyone is still supportive and encouraging, but still... I don't want you to be disappointed.
Jenn
donovans wife 07-23-2006, 06:22 PM Thank you Mrs. Benji Ill Try again after midnight tonight,
MonkeyBoi77 07-24-2006, 08:56 PM Yes mrs I will do that when I make one, it was pretty easy to make i will have to admit, now to teach the others how to do it
jaxitis 08-21-2006, 02:35 AM thank you for the effort of this post, I agree with the need that people in service also need to be able to feel relaxed among us all, and that is sad that anybody even feels the need to react as if they were in a prison here. I always say if you act, talk and do right all the time. You never have to worry about acting, doing or saying anything wrong! Sincerely, jaxitis
marcellosmama 08-22-2006, 11:17 PM I have enough posts to get into chat, but there is never anyone in there, is this normal? thanks
Pat
Atalie 08-23-2006, 08:29 AM Pat, you just never know. Sometimes there will be fourteen people in there and sometimes none. Tou might check the list of chat times for different groups and see if there is ones that appeals to you.
MrsBenji 08-23-2006, 08:46 AM I have enough posts to get into chat, but there is never anyone in there, is this normal? thanks
Pat
Yeap. It can be normal. The Chat Room is a VERY small portion of PTO. PTO is predominantly a message board with some extra features and the chat room is just one of those...
You will find that different times, like weekend evenings, there are quite a few more folks in there...
Jenn
JLdancerswoman 08-25-2006, 10:11 AM That is too long for me......I want to find people in my situation. Who help me in the "meantime" until it is time for my man to come home. I am in germany and can't even visit him it's really hard :-(

You will find that the chatroom is more of a place to relax and socialize. The message boards are where you will find others in your situation...
You might want to start with the Index Page...

Atalie 10-27-2006, 08:09 AM MamaHager welcome to PTO. There is a forum for CA members as well as one for wives and girlfriends of inmates. Also forums for parents or siblings of inmates. Just go to main page and scroll down you will see everything. You cannot get into chat until you have beena member for 2 weeks and have made 25 supportive posts. Good Luck!
hopejoy 11-15-2006, 12:22 PM hi i am new to this site can you help me with this. i am trying to find someone that was sentence to 18 to life and is there a free web site to go to find out where he was sent?
Atalie 11-15-2006, 06:02 PM HopeJoy, welcome to PTO. You can go to the DOC website for the state where he is, or the federal bureau of prisons if he is a federal inmate. There are no charge for these sites, and most have an inmate locator on them.
exprisonbabe 11-15-2006, 09:13 PM hey can we just chat a little?
exprisonbabe 11-15-2006, 09:14 PM How can I find an inmate in Chowchilla without calling the number that is posted?

This link will take you to the page with the chat room requirements. Welcome to PTO, I am sure if you check out the boards you will find forums that will suit your needs. I suggest you start with the main page and scroll down.
Atalie 11-15-2006, 09:48 PM You can look up the CA DOC and look there or go to the CA state forums and I am sure they will be able to help you.

turningpoint 12-24-2006, 06:39 PM Be cautious in your chat. Be aware of the information you give out and always, ALWAYS keep your personal life personal until you know who you're chatting with. And then be cautious. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

You have to have 25 supportive posts in order to chat, and when you hit the 25 it sometimes take until midnight of the day you get the 25 before you are given access to the chat room..
The chat room is a small part of pto, you can make friends and find iinformation on the boards as well .

When you've been a member for 2 wks and have 25 posts you will be able to enter the chat room. You do not have to join a chat room here.
my4js 04-23-2007, 12:41 PM Hang in there. I know it is tough. I wish I could say this was my first time dealing with prison with my boys but unfortuanaly they have been in and out since they were 15 years old and now they are 22 and 23. I will pray for you and just know that you are not alone. I hope that your son will learn his lesson the first time and be done with it and never go back. I Know that they don't relize what they put their family especially their mother throught when they make bad choices. God Bless Lisa from Georgia

Trixi39 07-04-2007, 09:13 PM How do you get to where you can go in chat ? Also can you start your own chat about a certain topic or particular prison ?:)
e_wife03 07-05-2007, 08:30 AM How do you get to where you can go in chat ? Also can you start your own chat about a certain topic or particular prison ?:)
Once you meet the requirements , you will be able to click on the chat option at the top and actually get into chat and talk to others. At this time our chat doesnt have that option. When that option is back up you will be able to to start different topic. if you are looking for information on a particular prison the best thing for you too do is check that state's forum

No, this is not lame. This is a world-wide forum and no one knows where Susanville is, because you didn't specify what state. Maybe you should try to scroll down the main page to the forum specific to your location, and post there, in a "share the ride" thread. Hope this helps a little.

A post is what you just did to this thread titled "Chatters please read" Thread is the title. Post is an answer, response, or in your case, a question. I hope this helps
LeBeau 07-15-2007, 06:36 PM Here are a few tips for new members, hope you find them helpful-
In order to use the chat room, you must have at least 25 post AND you need to have been a member for 2 weeks or more. Sometimes the system takes a few hours to recognize that you've become eligible for the chat room, so please be patient.
In the meanwhile, if you scroll down the Forum Index (http://prisontalk.com/forums/index.php), you'll surely find a forum that is relevant to your interests and concerns. Click on the forum title to enter the forum. Reply by either typing your reply into the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of the thread or by clicking on the "Post Reply" button just above the "Quick Reply" box, then click "Post Reply" when you've finished typing.
To create a new thread, look at the top of the thread list in any forum for a button marked "New Thread", click on that and it will open a window where you can give your thread a title and type up what you want to say or ask. When you are done, click near the bottom where it says "Submit New Thread" and your thread will be posted.
If you ever have trouble finding a post you made, go to the bottom of the main index, find your name in the list of members online, and click on your name. This will take you to your profile. Then choose "Find all posts by____" and you'll get a list of all of your posts/threads.
Hope this helps clear up some questions.
RShellie 12-13-2007, 10:44 PM Who is the PTO??? Please make me understand. Why do you all get to visit the chat room??? Why don't the supervisors of this room, let the members have enjoyment in this chat room??? Why can't we, the members chat without so many restrictions??? What has happen in the past, that has cause so many strict rules and restricitons. Most of the time I check out who is chatting and find no one available; The higher being of this chat room is to controlling.:sleepy:
LeBeau 12-14-2007, 06:45 AM RShellie, if you'll read the post right above yours, you'll find a run down on the chat thing.
PTO is this site.
The members are the heart and soul of PTO.
The chat room is just an "extra" that is no more vital to PTO's purpose than dessert is to the goal of providing nourishment.
annalookhart 12-15-2007, 06:23 PM I'm new to this and I wanna thank you for showing me that you stay on top of the rules so I can keep the support going for myself, Without actully dealing with....well u know
Darrick's Girl 12-29-2007, 07:07 PM I am a new member here. While I can totally appreciate the need to monitor the "chat" - it stinks that I have to wait to post 25 messages before I can chat. I'm shy! I've started a few threads, but it will take a VERY long time before I start that many!. The alternative is to wait 6 months to chat. Again, although I understand the policy, I could use a little support NOW. I guess even PTO isn't Perfect! :) Happy New Year to all!

You don't have to start 25 threads to be able to chat. You only have to make 25 posts. I see you already have 6, so you are already on your way. Chat is only an extra to PTO. Their are many forums that provide a wealth of information that I'm sure you will find useful. Happy reading!!!
BrandNewGirl 12-29-2007, 07:27 PM I was going to echo Ben's girl...you don't have to start them, just respond. Even if it's just a "welcome to PTO" post, you're getting to know others. Chat's not often too busy..the threads are your best bet anyway.

Disbelief 02-07-2008, 09:46 PM Tina, I feel your pain. My 19 year old Grandson was just sentenced to prison today for an incident that happened when he was 16 years old. This is an unpleasant new experience for me and my family. The pain is unbearable. I can't eat or sleep or even think straight! . I am so glad I found this site to talk with others who are going through the same thing. I will pray for you and your son tonight as well as my grandson.
reggie42 02-07-2008, 09:52 PM Hi Disbelief, I'm so sorry about your Grandson. Have you been over to the parents forum yet? There are alot of parents and Grandparents there, with a child in the system. Please join us, I'm sure you will find much needed support there. Here's a link to the forum:

He was posted in a local newspaper last month, but i did not ask for that much publicity. was in Avenal in 1999 myself. never really forgot the "(lonely)" days on the yard, walking off the personal grief over home and pets,...many very understanding inmates really helped. thankyou.
