I am really reaching here, but I am hoping those of you in school with heavy book loads can direct me on a good quality backpack.
This really doesnt have to do with adult education so to speak, but I figure you guys would have the best advice on what type of backpack is best.
I allowed my daughter to get more of a bookbag with one strap rather then a backpack and now with the heavy load along with having to carry her Violin she is suffering terrible backaches. In the past I the backpacks that worked for her were cheap ones at Walmart that dont normally cost more then 10.00, but I am willing to spend more in order to save her back

I'm with Bailey on this one...
Either that or one from LL Bean. They are kinda expensive, but they last and last and last!!

Thank you both very much. The poor kid came home today in tears becuase her back hurt sooo bad. I feel so bad for her and know that next year it will be worse in Jr. High.

Awww! The poor little one! What are they making kids carry these days? Dang!!
If they're that heavy, especially compared to her frame, look for one that will clip around her waist so it takes some of the weight and puts it on her hips instead of her shoulders and back.
Good luck!

I think the rolling ones would be the best, but they are not allowed in schools here. (not sure why)
I would like to throw in Jansport as another good backpack brand. I carried the same one all through college and my daughter even took it to school one year after her 'cheap one' broke. It held up to her, so I think it can survive almost anything and I rarely had a backache.

I've always used Jansport until this time around. I have a Timberland now and love it!!
I went to a couple places (not Walmart though) and found the Jansport, but couldnt find Timberland. I was gonna go with the Jansport, but wanted to wait and take a drive out to Walmart. We noticed the shoulder straps varried in softness and placement unlike a cheap backpack, but didnt find many options with waist staps.
She has one with wheels that she had last year, but its pretty warn out. She is willing to use it for the next few days until we can get a better one.
My next question is I saw a lot of them vinyl inside. Does it rip pretty easy? One of the things she has to carry back and forth is a 2 inch binger and I fear the binder corners ripping the vinyl

I have been carrying the same backpack for 25 years now and I have never had the vinyl to rip away. I am pretty hard on it also. I use it as my work bag and carry everything but the kitchen sink in it. It is alot easier on my back than trying to carry it by hand. Never have gotten a backache from mine.
Good luck to you. Hope you find one that will work for her well.
I keep reading that so many kids today are suffering from backaches etc because of the heavy backpacks. Keep in mind though that getting a well-designed backpack doesn't mean that kids will use them correctly - esp. if it isn't 'cool' at a partic. school to wear it a certain way!(From my own experiences with my son at that age:))
