View Full Version : Prejudice from neighbors
MrsSweets 09-10-2005, 05:45 PM Has anyone felt prejudice towards you/ your family because your loved one had been/ is in prison?
I know lots of people wonder if the neighbors can get you out of the area (I, myself wondered that) because your loved one was a felon (may it be drugs, assault, sex offense etc). I did some research and talked to some attorneys and it turns out there is no law saying you should move. The only person who may want you to move is the PO (if you have a sex offense charge and you live close to schools - basically something that would violate the restrictions). Other than that, attorneys advise you to stay where you are and if you are a victim of harassment, you can press charges.
Now, this is what I've heard and read, I may be wrong but it definitely gave me some peace.
I've personally never heard of anyone whos been run out of their neighborhood. I've heard of one person who tried to have someone forced to move, but that never happened. A year later to my knowledge the person is still in the same house they were.
Quite honestly there are lots of SO in every zip code around here and most people seem clueless to them. My brother lives in one of the most popular SO zip codes and him and his wife or their neighbor had a clue just how many there were.
I dont know if the neighbors are notified when a violant SO moves into the area (to my knowledge they arent) but I do know that the most polular level of SOs dont have notices issues to neighbors.
I think the only problem a SO could have is the same as any felon and a landlord running you off for being a offender in general, but if you are a homeowner then I think the odds of being run out are much slimmer.
I use SO as an example because they are the only ones you can get numbers for as far as areas. I am sure that all other offenders are just as equal, but I have no way of knowing. I am also sure that unless someone sees probation/parole at the house the neighbors would have no way of knowing as well. However when probation/parole does their home checks that is probably the biggest clue that whoever lives there is an offender of any kind. In fact not long ago I saw them at a house across the street and had NO clue the person living there was on probation/parole until I saw the POs show up
MrsSweets 09-11-2005, 12:31 AM Thanks for the input, Tanya!!
I hope the neighbors are on vacation whenever the PO shows up at our house...or maybe asleep :D
MiaBellaAngela 09-11-2005, 08:32 AM I have heard of people being run out due to racism. I have also heard of people who are sex offenders being run out when the neighbors find out, but that was not in Idaho. (I saw it on the news). I have not heard of other offenders being run out.
The good news is that if there is no law, then you can stay!
Hopefully you won't have any neighbors (does Idaho have enough people in it for neighbors?)and you can be left alone!:D :D :p :p (That was a joke TNC!!) Ha ha.

funnyface09 09-15-2005, 11:00 PM Well, there seems to be life within these hallowed walls after all!!! LOL
Just teasing Tanya!
I remember reading about one offender who was burned out of his home by some jerk who didn't want an SO living anywhere in his State, City, whatever! there have been lots of people trying to force SO's out of there neighborhoods with no luck. but don't EVEN try to get into a gated community or such because it will be a NO go for you! These people make their own rules. and decide who gets to buy a home, rent a home, etc in there community.
MrsSweets 09-16-2005, 09:55 AM Sherrie, ours is a gated community and my fiance bought the house with no problem. Now, since there is no SO in our Zip Code (thanks to a research Tanya made) it'll be interesting (lack of a better word) to see how things will turn out.
funnyface09 09-17-2005, 12:45 PM but did he buy it before or after he was charged?
That would be interesting to know.
MrsSweets 09-17-2005, 05:11 PM He bought it while on probation :D but we couldn't move in since he went to prison a few days later
The only distinction that can be made in regards to home ownership discrimination is a senior citizen complex. A neighborhood designed specifically for the elderly can put ownership restrictions in regards to age. Any other home ownership restriction is illegal. Legally, a HOA cannot determine who can own property in the neighborhood, but they could make it miserable in ways other than ownership. However, an owner can refuse to rent to a felon on any kind.
