I just moved into this apartment and now that I have all of my stuff in here I am starting to smell pet urine! Is there an air freshener or something that can cover or illiminate it? Thanks!

There is a product called Natures Miracle that I have seen at stores that is supposed to remove pet stains and odors but I haven't tried it so don't know how well it works

Try sprinkling baking soda or a carpet deodorizer on the carpet then vacum and see if that helps

natures miracle or something like that is your best bet.
it has to be something that breaks it down, otherwise the smell will still linger.
try at a pet store.

I have always had animals and have never found anything that takes the smell away. Especially if it's cat urine. I have recarpted so many times I should own shares in the carpet store. I would contact the landlord and complain. I have a gallon of Nature's Miracle right now and it didn't do much of anything,

This really works great and was told to me by a person that cleans carpets as a profession. Pour vinegar on the spot and then place a towel and a heavy object on it for a few hours then let dry. The vinegar neutralizes the odor, it works every time and even on cat urine.

If the cats have peed in the same place several times, then the floor is probably holding the smell - which means the carpets need to come up and the floors refinished. Ugh! This is experience speaking.

I don't know how good it is, but I have seen it advertised on TV, a product called Urine Gone. They guarantee it and at least during the commercial it shows where it goes down to the padding under the carpet and cleans it off through there right to the floor. I am hoping it would come to the stores like other products that start off on TV do, however, I may end up just getting it from TV.

fill a spray bottle with half vinegar and half water and spray it on your carpets. itll smell like vinegar for a few days but itll take the urine smell out. open a window to air it out afterwards and your place will smell as good as new

Hi!
I think Vinegar is the best and the cheapest.

I'm not sure if you still have the carpet there, as it has a backing, and that ammonia smell gets in the fibers and the foam, or whatever the backing is.

That Nature's miracle is sooo expensive.

Good luck!

Natures Miracle, vinager, odor be gone....all that stuff never worked for me.
However, I got this recipe from a friend, and it works wonders. (I ahve a cat that thinks that the area NEXT to the back door is his litter box!
The formula consists of the following three materials which are listed below. There is a good chance that you may already have these materials in your home. 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Baking Soda Liquid Hand Soap (any type or brand including anti-bacterial)These materials will make up the Pet Odor Eliminator Formula ©However, they need to be added in the correct ratios to be effective. I cannot send the solution already premixed because it needs to be made just before using it. It also CANNOT be stored in any type of closed container because when you mix the hydrogen peroxide with the baking soda it releases excessive amounts of oxygen molecules. You really can't see this chemical reaction taking place, but if it is stored in a closed container it may explode. Let me assure you this solution is perfectly SAFE to make and use; it just can't be stored in a closed container. If you do not have a printer, please let me know and I will send the formula and instructions to you via the U.S Mail.PET ODOR ELIMINATOR FORMULA AND INSTRUCTIONS ©Thank you for your interest in what I have experienced as a revolutionary Cat, Dog, and Pet Urine Odor Eliminator for removing pet urine odors. The formula used according to instructions will eliminate the odor of pet urine by oxidation - getting oxygen molecules to bond with the odor producing compounds and neutralize them. This formula was originally intended to remove skunk spray odors, but I discovered its effectiveness on cat urine odors when one of our five family felines decided to "do her business" outside of the litter box. I made up the formula and I was absolutely amazed at the results. It completely removed any trace of cat urine odor.Listed below are the materials needed to make the Pet Urine Odor Eliminator Formula ©- 3% Hydrogen Peroxide- Baking Soda- Liquid Hand Soap (any type or brand including anti-bacterial)Other items that you will need include:- a clean, empty 8 oz. or 16 oz. container- plastic spoon- waterproof gloves (such as dishwashing gloves)- paper towelsI recommend getting a large bottle (32 oz.) of 3% hydrogen peroxide. You might want to buy more than one bottle if you have more than one area that needs to descented. I can find it at Walmart, K-Mart (Big K), or Target for about $0.75. One box (16 oz.) of baking soda costs less than $0.40 and makes countless applications of the solution.I like to make the formula in a clean 8-oz. yogurt cup, but you can use any type of 8oz. or 16oz. container. You can also use baking measuring cups to make the formula - 1cup equals 8oz. and 2 cups equals 16oz.On new, wet urine areas, wear your waterproof gloves to soak up as much of the urine as possible with the paper towels. I usually press firmly down into the carpet pad. This enables me to soak up a good amount of the urine. On old urine areas where the odor has been inbedded in your carpet there is no preparation necessary. I have not experimented with urine areas older than 1 week, but I would think that as long as this solution gets soaked into the carpet and pad it should deodorize it. You may need to apply more than one application. PLEASE DO NOT STORE THIS SOLUTION IN ANY TYPE OF CLOSED CONTAINER BECAUSE IT MAY EXPLODE. THIS IS DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF OXYGEN MOLECULES THAT ARE GENERATED WHEN MIXING THE SOLUTION. MAKE SOLUTION ONLY WHEN NEEDED. ANY UNUSED LIQUID SOLUTION CAN BE SAFELY DISPOSED OF DOWN YOUR SINK OR TOILET. It is important to add the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda in the correct amounts. Too much of one material or too little of another will not produce enough oxidation to work at its maximum efficiency.16oz. of the solution is usually enough for a regular sized urine area. You will need to make two applications if making in an 8oz. (1 cup) container. If you are making in a 8oz. (1 cup) container. Add 8 oz. of 3% hydrogen peroxide into a container.
Add 1 level teaspoon of baking soda.
Add 1 small (drop) of liquid hand soap.
Mix using a plastic spoon for fifteen seconds.
If you are making in a 16oz. (2 cups) container.Add 16 oz. of 3% hydrogen peroxide into a container.
Add 2 level teaspoons of baking soda.
Add 2 small (drops) of liquid hand soap.
Mix using a plastic spoon for fifteen seconds.
Scotchgarded Versus Non-Scotchgarded Carpets None of the rooms in our house that are carpeted were ever Scotchgarded. I bought some Scotchgarded carpet remnants and experimented with them realizing that many people have Scotchgarded carpeting. It is a little more difficult to apply the formula on Scotchgarded carpets because the solution kind of beads up and sits on top of the carpet. It also has a tendency to crawl or run on the carpet if the floor isn't exactly flat and level in that area. However, a Scotchgarded carpet can only hold so much liquid before it begins to penetrate and soak into the carpet. You may find that you need to make a little more of the solution when using in on Scotchgarded carpets. However, if the urine has already penetrated the Scotchgarding because it has been sitting there undetected for a few hours, it should also allow the solution too more quickly soak into the carpet. Before Applying the SolutionUnfortunately, this step may not be the most pleasant experience, but I recommend smelling the area first so you know where to apply the solution. The smell is obviously the strongest in the middle of the urine area, but it may have been sprayed or splashed outside of the primary urine area.Applying the SolutionIMPORTANT: Pour slowly and evenly on the main odor area and saturate the carpet. It is extremely important that it gets penetrated into the carpet pad. When main odor area is saturated, then apply solution to surrounding areas where urine may have been sprayed or splashed. Let the solution dry by itself for 1-2 days. There is a chance that the baking soda has left a white residue on the carpet. This will usually clean up when you vacuum. If not, just wash the area thoroughly with a sponge and water and let it dry. It may also feel like there are tiny air bubbles on top of the carpet which is residual oxidation (oxygen molecules) that have surfaced from the bottom of the carpet. I don't have any experience using the formula in a carpet cleaner as I don't own one. However, several people have used it in a carpet cleaner and have told me it worked very well.Do not dilute the formula with water or other cleaning solutions and shampoos as this will definitely make the formula ineffective. It must be used by itself in the machine. I'm not sure how much liquid a carpet cleaner can hold, but you can multiply the amounts by two, three, four, etc. and mix in a large container. Some people have told me they turned the cleaner on while others said they didn't turn the cleaner on, but just pressed the button and released the solution along the floor.

I personally wouldn't buy anything, if she has a landlord I'd complain because the landlord should do all the work. That's why she is paying rent.

Anything w/ ammonia will only attract animals BACK to that spot to urinate again. Always be careful what you clean your floors w/ because of that. One of the best things I've found is Armstrong floor cleaner. It's a little pricey, but it seems to do a decent job on my kitchen floors (where the majority of our accidents occur).

Ok, seems like everyone has an opinion, so here's mine. On the carpets, I mix a half cup of peroxide with a tablespoon of baking soda, and about a tablespoon of liquid dish soap, scrub it good with a scrub brush (this is after blotting up as much of the urine as possible). Then, after about an hour, I scrub the area with my carpet shampooer with straight water in it. Peroxide usually won't hurt your carpet, but test some in a corner to be safe. This is the same recipe I make in a larger quantity, to get the skunk smell off my dogs when they run into one. It really does work, like an earlier post suggersted. But you can make it simple, and it is cheap. Now, on my kitchen linoleum, the odor isn't as penetrable, and I just mop good with some pine sol. The person that said anything with amonia in it would attract the animals back, was also very correct. But the peroxide and baking soda/ dish soap solution does totally nutralize the odor for carpets. And again, do not mix in advance or try to store it pre-mixed. Just mix a little as needed. But, I get the ingredients together and am not exact with measurements, close will do. Found the recipe first on the internet for skunk removal. There is said: 1 quart peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 2 tablespoons liquid dish soap. I make a smaller batch for the pet urine accidents and just guess at it. I don't even measure for the skunk removal, and it works great. Oh, hardwood floors are something else. Use caution with these on hard wood floors. I haven't tried them on hard wood floors. Haven't had any accidents of this nature on mine. I mop mine with murphy's oil soap, but I'm not sure if that is the best.
