Does anyone know which county jails house prison inmates while they are waiting for room in the prison they are assigned to? I know not all of them do, and the only 2 I know of for sure are in Rhinelander and Manitowoc. Does anyone know which other ones do? I am just curious, because I know that once the inmate is assigned to a prison, if they don't have any serious medical problems or other problems that require attention right away, they will most likely go to a county jail in the interim until there is room at their prison. Just wondering how far away my husband can possibly go.

I was looking at a DOC monthly report of inmate statistics for Aug. 2005 and saw some info that may answer your question. It looks like WI has "contract beds" in jails in the following counties ( the # after each county indicates inmate population): Columbia - 14, Douglas - 25, Florence - 11, Forest - 13, Langlade - 36, Manitowoc - 41, Milwaukee - 56, Oneida- 44, Outagamie - 108, Sheboygan -21 , Vilas -36, Waushara - 48, and Winnegao - 58. It seems there are also 32 inmates in contract beds in Federal Facilities.

The full report is at http://www.wi-doc.com/index_adult.htm and the info about contract beds is on the 2nd page.

Hope your loved one ends up near you.
