View Full Version : College courses ONLINE?
MrsBenji 08-31-2005, 10:25 AM I am completing my BA and Masters in Accounting online, through Strayer University. I really do like it a lot. They have great support and the variety of classes is really wide.
Do you take any classes online? Where? What's your experience with them?

Nuro's Wife 08-31-2005, 10:32 AM I have taken a few online courses and I loved them. I like the time flexibility that they offered. I am a lone soldier too when it comes to studying so I prefer the online venue over a classroom setting anyday.
Nuro's Wife 08-31-2005, 10:36 AM My girlfriend is working on her masters online with University of Phoenix and she has lots of group projects that don't seem to work out too well in the online world. Maybe this is something that instructors need to think more closely about when they are designing their curriculum.
Group projects were always hard even in the classroom setting with everyone's different home/work life schedules. I couldn't imagine trying to coordinate an "online" schedule too into the mix.
I think the online thing is great for individual performance; but for group projects I am not so sure.
MrsBenji 08-31-2005, 11:07 AM One of my classes had a group project. It was horrible trying to coordinate things online and there were so many complaints that the prof changed it to give us the option to work on it individually too.
I love being able to log in 24/7 and complete my assignments though. But still sticking to a schedule keeps me in check, where as an independent study course, with a free schedule, would probably encourage me to be lazy.

sdylan06 08-31-2005, 11:18 AM i'm in college now getting my associates but i'm thinking when i'm done in january i'm going to get my BA online.........w/working full time and my schedule, i think it would be best for me......but i'm still looking into it
marcsbaby 08-31-2005, 12:10 PM I am taking a lot of online classes with my degree...as many as I can, because it is so much more practical for me and my schedule. I was a little scared at first when I took a strictly online course, because I didn't know what to expect....the only real advice I can give is with an online course, you have to be very diciplined....you have to dedicate your time to doing your assignments and such, because without an instructor sitting there telling you to do something, sometimes it gets put off.....
Good luck, and if I can help ya in any way, let me know~

David 08-31-2005, 12:24 PM Please be sure and post links to them as well. :)
marriola482 08-31-2005, 12:26 PM Interesting thread! I was wondering about online courses myself because I just recently researched a bit about getting my Master's in Psychology or Human Services. Does anyone know a respected program for that field? I know as of right now University of Phoenix does not have that specific one. Thanks!
MrsBenji 08-31-2005, 12:43 PM Well, mine is Strayer University, www.strayer.edu.
They might have that program Marriola. Check them out.. :)

yanigirl 08-31-2005, 01:52 PM I attend a CUNY school in New York City and here many colleges offer both. I have an online English course this semester. To me it is more work and you really have to keep up with the assignments because it is very easy to fall behind.
e_wife03 08-31-2005, 02:19 PM have yall done math classes online and how do they differ from being in the class.. do yall find it easier than being in a classroom .. and how do they go about doing tests

I've done all sorts online. Strayer is really cool. I log on and I have the option of reading the *lecture* notes, hearing the lecture, or watch a recording for most all of my classes. I do find it easier, just because I print the notes and then listen or watch and take my own notes on the print out.
Tests are always open book, of course. I have a timeframe to log into the specific test, and once I log in, I have a set amount of time to take the exam. Some are multiple choice (most of them are at least partially) or short answer, or essay or anything else, really.
I've found that the online profs are more available than ones in normal conditions. Most of my classes have a scheduled weekly chat, a message board, and plenty of contact info, including IM handles.
I'm rambling. I'll shush for now.

Alot of my Nursing classes are offered here and I can go for my Master's through this school also.
Jonathan 08-31-2005, 06:42 PM I attend East Mississippi Community College www.emcc.cc.ms.us (http://www.emcc.cc.ms.us)
The website is down at the moment due to the hurricane.
I am a Speech & Public Relations Major. Also on the newspaper and Yearbook.
I have taken online classes and while they are easier because you are in comfort of your home, you also have a larger work load. You have to read more, study lecture notes, etc. I wouldn't suggest taking a lot at once.
kayos-grl 09-12-2005, 07:42 AM I take all the classes that I can online, but at the school I attend you can't take any medical classes online.

closedaccountformerlysupernova2005 10-07-2005, 08:19 PM FYI: A good website to check into online and distance learning degrees is www.petersons.com
It seems to be the most comprehensive website as far as colleges, degree programs - just about anything you can think of.
Fowler228 10-08-2005, 10:57 AM take online classes at the University of Maryland. It is the greatest! I can get my work done on my own time and still receive a quality education. classesusa.com (http://classesusa.com)is a good place to search for schools as well.
whiskeylullabye 10-08-2005, 10:59 AM I'm taking my classes online, National University.
It's SOOOOOOOOOOO hard.
Mongo's Mama 10-08-2005, 12:15 PM I want to take some classes online!!! But what kind of price are we talking about here?
I always wanted to go to college, but bills needed to be paid, excuses, excuses. I know I'll probably never actually get the chance to go to college, but I'd still like to get an education.
Props to all of you who are continuing your educations!!!
whiskeylullabye 10-08-2005, 12:21 PM I pay $995 a class.
MrsBenji 10-08-2005, 02:41 PM Mine is just a bit more than Whiskey's.
And you still qualify for financial aid Mongo's!! It can't hurt to try!! ;)
Jenn
I teach on-line as well as on campus... We might not offer a ton of degrees and we're just a community college but it's only $85 a credit hour and we are accredited.... You could at least do your gen ed classes here if we don't have the degree you're looking for and then transfer your gen eds to whatever college you'll get your degree from... Check it out at: http://www.bmcc.edu/virtual.htm.
Deb
MrsBenji 10-08-2005, 10:28 PM Damn Deb, that is cheap!!! For ANY online course. If I didn't already have my basics covered, I would definitely go for it.
Thanks for the info!!!

Jessiegirl813 10-09-2005, 01:06 AM Wow this was great cause I am looking in to doing online classes for Education or Social Services, has anyone taken these?
closedaccountformerlysupernova2005 10-13-2005, 09:17 PM Hey Mongo's Mama,
It is tough with money going to school. I work for a county agency where I live and we have our tuition paid for if we attend our Community College. Not a bad deal - the books are still expensive. I will receive my Associates in December and from here will attend an online college out west for the Bachelors. If you check the Peterson's website I previously mentioned you can get a lot of info about degrees offered, tuition, etc. Petersons also has some online resources regarding paying for school. You can also check out www.fastweb.com which has a lot of info regarding companies that offer scholarships. It's definitely worth looking into. You can also find out about colleges and scholarships online and in your local library.
Hope this helps.
