AUSTIN - Karla Faye Tucker, a pickax killer turned Christian, was executed Tuesday, spending her last minutes apologizing to her victims and expressing love for her family. "I love all of you very much. I will see you all when you get there. I will wait for you," were her final words.
Ms. Tucker, the first woman executed in Texas since the Civil War, was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m., eight minutes after receiving an injection at the state prison in Huntsville.

Strapped to a gurney in the prison death chamber, Ms. Tucker smiled at family members, who watched from behind a double pane of glass. "Everybody has been so good to me. I love all of you very much. I'm going to be face to face with Jesus now," Ms. Tucker said in a brief statement.
She also sought forgiveness, saying: "Yes, sir, I would like to say to all of you, the Thornton family and Jerry Dean's family, that I am so sorry. I hope God will give you peace with this."
When she finished, Ms. Tucker closed her eyes, licked her lips and appeared to say a silent prayer. She coughed twice, groaned softly and went silent as the drugs took effect, according to an Associated Press reporter who witnessed the execution.
