My cousin was just transfered there and I've checked the CDC website for info and they haven't added this prison yet. I just spent over 20 minutes on hold trying to get through to someone via the inmate locator.

I need visiting info if anyone has any or a telephone number or something.

For those of you who have visited there - can you give me a little info do's/don'ts how early to get there, etc. Thank you so much

If you come across the mailing address, could you shoot it this way please. So far the staff have not been very helpful when I have called....maybe they were having a bad day.

Thank you!

Sure, no problem. I'm going to visit my cousin this Saturday - I'll be sure to give you the 411 on visiting as well.

California Activates Kern Valley State Prison, Receives First Inmates on June 15
DELANO –- The California Department of Corrections (CDC) will formally activate California’s 33rd prison, Kern Valley State Prison (KVSP), on Wednesday, June 15, with the arrival of the first Level I (Minimum Security) inmates. Designed as a Level IV (Maximum-Security) institution, it will house about 5,000 inmates when it is fully activated in January 2006. The institution is also designed to be the first fully programmed Level IV institution in California with a variety of academic and vocational education programs, thereby increasing an offender’s chances of reentering society successfully.

I was able to get in touch with my cousins wife who goes to visit every weekend and she says that visiting is not bad;however, they are enforcing the rule about sandals - they must have a strap on them that goes across the heel. She's says that it's extremely hot out there, and that she normally gets there about 8a.m. and that visiting is from 8:30 until 2:00 or 2:30p.m. She says that there are about 3 c.o.'s that are constantly walking around during visitation.

P.S. My cousins wife also said that they allow visiting even if they are on lockdown. I would still call the visitor info line first. I just called it 9/1 at 8:08 am) and it hasn't been updated since last Thursday.

Here's the mailing address for anyone that may need it

Kern Valley State Prison
P.O. Box 5102

Visitor info line (800) 374-8474

Well that's all I've got, I hope that information is helpful.

After 5 years of him being locked up. Visiting wasn't bad. They are EXTREMELY SLOW in processing visitors in - perhaps it was just the day I went which was on Saturday. We got there about 8:30 am and didn't go through the metal dector until about 9:15 am. They had to stop and take a break after they process each visitor  I thought I smelled Krispy Kreme's:p

The visiting room is quite a ways away from the front entrance and you have to walk through the prison to get to the visiting room. They are supposed to get a tram to transport visitors, but who knows when that will happen.

Overall it wasn't bad - they did terminate visits though:mad: - which is determined by which inmates come in first. There didn't seem to be any consideration given to how far you traveled.

The CO's were decent. The only bad part was that it took so long to get in.

This is not the address for all inmates. It depends on what yard they are on this is the address for all inmates housed on E yard. If you are unsure where the inmate is located and where to write, call the prison, and ask for the records department.well for his letters to get to him faster write Name, cdc #
