Excellent question. JDW still wants to get married and of course we cannot because of his misconducts, but one of the things we need are too, his birth certificate and SSC. His mother does not have either documents.

If someone could answer this question for Oklahoma too, that would be great!

I believe he has to send for them. Or you can try calling for it. You can get the BC from the hospital for like $5, I think mine was. I forget if I called them or wrote to them.

For the SS card, I think it can be done by mail too.

I am surprised he does not have these things. Does his family?

All copies of certified birth certificates can be obtained through the state inwhich he was born. The cost varies by state. Many times you can go to the county records and obtain. If not most states house certified copies within their vital stastics office; usually linked throught the health department.

Here is a link for vitalcheck; which will handle for each state. The cost is higher utilizing their servicees, but they offer expedited services as well.

You can get the SSA appliation online to get a copy of his SS card. He needs to sign the form and you can take it to your local SSA office with some kind of ID for him (see if you can get a copy of his DOCS ID card) unless you have his driver's license or other photo ID. You should be able to get his SSA card sent to him, you will have to present some kind of ID and an explanation as to whyhe is not present himself. Most SSA offices are good and will be helpful. NYS birth certificates can be obtained where born or through the state vital records as Rywill pointed out. They are cheaper at the municipality where born, versus the state. You may have to have a picture ID again, I'm not sure about NY. Check the link Rywill posted, unless you can go locally. You'll need his parents full name, including mom's maiden name, and some explanation as to why he is not there personally.

If none of this works, he can complete the forms needed himself, and sned them directly to the SS Office and whereever he gets his BC from, along with a request as how to proceed, and go from there. Sometimes this is easier, becasue it cuts down the running around. You can get the stuff he needs to complete, and send to him to get the ball rolling.

the birth cert wasn't to difficult, but the ssn is proving a headache. They need a birth cert and another form of Id to get a card. Not just the info unfortunately.
I am still waiting for an answer from the social security admin. about if a prison id is acceptable.

Morning all:
In order to get the birthcert. he need to send a copy of his ID if possible with a letter give you permission to get his BC and the BC is mailed out to you the cost is $15. As far as the SS card, he is the only one who can get that. There is also a laision in the facilily he is in that is suppose to work with them on that, tell him to speak with the counselor on that. I've been through this whole process already of trying to get the BC and SS card. I was able to file out for the BC with a copy of his ID and was told by the SS admin. that there is a liaison in facility that handles that. You can also call the facility and ask to speak to someone in the counselor unit and they can better assist you. Hope this helps.

What's funny abgirl is when we got married, I was told I needed all that stuff this past time and they never checked it or ask for it before they issues the license. The first time we got a license and he didn't haev his birth certificate or social security card. It's best to have it and not need it... but I ran around getting his birth certifcate, and it was never required...at least now we have it.

He can get these documents himself at the facility, he would just need to put in a request at no cost. I work for SSA and only the individual can request it. My boo went through this and he didn't have to pay anything. As someone else mentioned there is a liason at the facility that can put the paper work in for him. Good Luck.

Abgirl, Tell your bf to follow up on it, it seems that is the best way to go.

just fyi. when we signed the license for our marriage cert. all he needed to show them was his prison picture id. check with the FRP coordinator whether he even needs this or not, did someone tell him he did?

Actually the only way for an inmate in custody to reciev a birth certificate and SS card is to have him write a letter to the Transitional Services department and they will process his application for both free of charge.

You cannot send away in the mail with a photocopy of his ID anymore after 9/11.

I spoke with his aunt and she has his ss card, I spoke with him and he said he will go to transitional service to request the birth certificate. Mrs. G I ask him that and he said he never had to request it or a need for it.
