A friend was recently sentenced to five years in Parchman and is in Unit 30 C. Does anyone have information about this unit? Is it violent? I know nothing about prisons or prison life and am curious as to what his life will be like the next few years. He's only been there a month and is having a really hard time adjusting. Any advice I can give him?

Ok here it goes...
Go to the solid blue line above post reply and you will see calendar, arcade, etc...

Hi Carla,

My husband is in 30D. He (Tony) likes Unit 30. I tried to get him to go to one of the trustee camps but he wanted to stay in 30 so I guess that speaks for itself. To be honest, I think it's one of the best camps to be in. It's not a violent camp at all and believe it or not, most of the officers seem cool. Most of them know me on a first name basis since I've been visiting there so long! :)

Tony works in maintenace there and everybody calls him Block. Ask your friend if he knows him. Tony's what they call an "old convict" and he's genuinely a nice guy so if your friend needs anything or needs any advice, I know Tony would look out on him. If you want to give me his name, I'll ask Tony if he knows him.

On a different note, 30C visits on Saturday and I'm there every Saturday. Do you think you will be visiting?

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Connie

Everyone, thanks for the welcome!

Connie, thanks for your response. My friend is actually my sister's boyfriend, and since I live in Southwest Missouri it's too far for me to drive with a baby. Also, I'm not on his visitors list, but I write him weekly. I think he's a good guy who made a poor choice. My family didn't know about his imprisonment until just before he went in, and my parents are having a hard time dealing with the situation, so he and my sister aren't getting much support. I'll e-mail you his name and some other information and I'd appreciate it if your husband could look in on him. He's only been there a month and is pretty lonely.

Thanks again for the information!

Carla

No Problem, Carla. I'll see Tony tomorrow and I'll tell him. I'm sorry he and your sister aren't getting much support, that makes it even harder. It's nice of you to write him and be there for her. I wish you all the best.

Been out of area, and just got to a computer, he is in a very good unit, and violence is at a minimum. Let him know he is lucky and blessed to be where he is, because take it from me, there is alot worse out there than 30. Tell him to take advantage of every learning situation and anything that can better him. They are watching what he does while he is inside. and if he does right he has a better chance of coming home alot sooner. I was at Parchman for 2 years, if you have any questions specifically please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks for your input. I'm so relieved to hear that he's not in a bad unit. I also hope he will obtain his GED while he's there. He was sentenced to five years, but I'm not sure if that's a mandatory sentence or if he'll have the opportunity for parole before that. I'm sure I'll send you questions and they come to mind. Thanks again for your help!

I have a friend in Unit 30 and he doesn't say too much about it. I got the impression from others, though, that this is a pretty good unit to be in compared to some of the others. I believe it's what I would call an open air unit. There aren't any individual cells. Everybody sleeps in a big room and the toilets and showers are open air as well. He said that's pretty hard to get used to!
