Hi everyone. Okay, here's the deal. I'm starting graduate school soon (within the next year), and I am also thinking of getting married within the next year. Does anyone know how marriage would affect my financial aid status since he's in prison and has basically no income or assets whatsoever? Someone told me it would improve my status (I'd get more $$) and someone told me it might have a negative effect on it (I'd get less $$). So, I was wondering if anyone has been through this or knows anything about it cuz I'm a little confused. Any info, advice or referrals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Also, I wasn't sure if I posted this in the right forum, but I didn't know where else to post it. Sorry if I did, feel free to move it. :)

Hey Jess...
It depends, honestly. Certain grants and such are not available to married folks. In general, since he would have no income to add to the household income, it would lower the income bracket you fall into and would probably increase the amount you are eligible for. Just remember all of the info you have to have from him for your FAFSA!
Good luck!

hey i am currently in school also and i ama getting financial aid they know that i am married and actually i am getting more now that i am married .. it doesnt affect your financial aid.. cuz in actuality there is a question that ask if yall live together or seperate .. and i of course put seperate.. .. but i am still married .. so since you are living seperately it still based on your income alone.. as it would of have before..

My marriage also improved my financial aide. I made too much money myself last year but since we added him on it brought me down enough to get financial aide. We just put him as part of the household...

It would probably improve financial aid amounts because it is another dependent. Also, if you are not over the age of 25 it would classify u as an independent student which gives you a higher bracket rate also.
