Rader arrives at El Dorado prison in chains

BY STAN FINGER
The Wichita Eagle

With the razor wire gleaming in the freshly risen sun, serial killer Dennis Rader arrived at the El Dorado state prison early this morning. The four-car escort delivered him to the prison at 7:28 a.m., with Sedgwick County Sheriff Gary Steed riding in the back seat with Rader.

Wearing a red jumpsuit and shackled at the forearms, waist and ankles, Rader made the short walk from a sedan to the prison's reception and diagnostic unit. A cluster of reporters and photographers chronicled BTK's arrival in prison, where he will serve 10 life sentences with no chance of parole for more than 40 years.
As BTK, Rader killed 10 people between 1974 and 1991.

Once Rader was inside, prison warden Ray Roberts read a statement confirming his arrival, but took no questions.
Like other new inmates, Rader will be evaluated to determine long-term placement. The process typically takes two to four weeks, prison officials said. Among the considerations are psychological and security needs.
In about a month, Sedgwick County Judge Greg Waller will make recommendations to the Department of Corrections about the conditions of Rader's incarceration.

Rader may well be assigned to stay at El Dorado; it houses several men who were given the death penalty. They remain in their one-man cells 23 hours a day.
