If its ok with everyone, I'd like this kept in the Spiritual Connection, because I'm interested to know what others felt they were able to promise spiritually as well as in any other way when they married their spouse. Not everyone has traditional vows or 'love, honour and obey' these days and I was wondering if your marriage promises were based around your faith, whatever it may be.

When I married my now ex-husband we did the traditional vows (love, honor, cherish, blah, blah blah). But Jamie and I have decided to write our own vows. I've been working on mine, but I still have until April 2007. I have plenty of time, but I want them to be perfect.

We had a Muslim wedding ceremony inside of a facility. It was a very traditional ceremony with the traditional sayings.

Here is what we pledged:

Bride: “I, _________, offer you myself in marriage inaccordance with the instructions of the Holy Quar‘an and the Holy Prophet, peace and blessing be upon Him. I pledge, in honesty and with sincerity, to be for you anobedient and faithful wife.”

Groom: “I pledge, in honesty and sincerity, to be for youa faithful and helpful husband.”

We spoke our vows in Arabic and in English. We plan to renew our vows when Nuro comes home in 2007, God-willing; and we will write our own sayings for the ceremony.Great thread!

I've never seen or heard Muslim wedding vows before, thanks for sharing those :)
These Texas proxy weddings complicate things a little, and because Ray isnt pagan I'm a little reluctant to include more than a few specifically heathen references, but we have agreed that we would like to use this:

Put your hand on my heart, say that you love me as
The woods upon the hills cleave to the hills' contours.
I will uphold you, trunk and shoot and flowering sheaf,
And I will hold you, roots and fruit and fallen leaf.
by E.J.Scovell

We like this because trees are important to both of us in many ways, and the words illustrate perfectly the inevitable componanats of a long relationship.
