To prevent accidental shootings, Wichita police and Project ChildSafe are giving away the locks.

Police Dept. offers free gun locks
To combat accidental shootings, gun owners -- especially those with children in the house -- can contact the Police Department to get a free gun lock.
Though you can get them year-round, a national firearms safety program delivered 500 new gun locks to the Wichita Police Department, hoping to spark new interest in the give-away.
Lt. Mitch Dunbar said there have been four accidental shootings in Wichita in the past 18 months, and that number can be considered low.
"We've been giving out gun locks for three years," he said. "I'd like to think that's made a difference."
Project ChildSafe spokeswoman Shari LeGate said the foundation has given away 30 million gun locks since 1999.
An award-winning shooter, she demonstrated Thursday how easy it is to apply the lock to a handgun. It took her less than 10 seconds.
"10 seconds is worth the life of any child," she said.
The kits include safety tips and directions on how to apply the lock, and the Wichita Police Department inserts a copy of city ordinances.
The state was provided with 155,000 locks, said Kansas Lt. Gov. John Moore. They will be available in all 105 Kansas counties.
"In some small way, you can consider this a gift to life," he said.
Project ChildSafe, part of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, is aiming to distribute 12 million gun locks nationwide this year.
Project HomeSafe, a similar project also funded by the NSSF, provided gun locks in 2000, but about 200 of them were recalled in Wichita because a design flaw enabled the locks to be forced open.
To get a gun lock, you can call your local police department. In Wichita, call community affairs at 268-4101 to obtain one.
