I am thinking about starting a small lavendar garden, but am baffled at where the seeds come from. Do the seeds come from the flower??? Or do i just go to the gardening section & buy a package of seeds??

California Sunshine 08-04-2005, 11:00 PM Found some info here http://users.bestweb.net/~habitat/lavender.htm Lavenders grow best in fast-draining soil and in full sun. Good air circulation is necessary to deter fungal diseases. Prune plants lightly in early spring to shape, and after flowering to divert energy into foliar growth rather than seed production. Lavenders can be propagated by seed, or to ensure lineage, by semi-ripe cuttings. Lavenders may develop root rot and fungal diseases when grown in wet areas. Mildew is a problem in humid areas. Planting Position is important, lavender is a Mediterranean plant and likes a sunny aspect. It will therefore flourish where it can get full sun in the middle of the garden or against a south facing wall or on a south facing bank. Planted against a non south facing bank or wall is less successful as the flower spikes are "drawn" forward to the light, thus spoiling the delicious rectitude of lavender in full flower. For specimen planting, most lavender varieties are best planted in clumps of 3 for the larger varieties or 5 for dwarf varieties to provide focus points. Patio planting lavenders are best planted singly in patio pots. If you want your lavenders to last a long time remember to use a deep enough pot. The dwarf lavenders will probably need a 5 quart pot, the larger ones a 7 quart pot. Perhaps the most common use of lavender is in hedges and along paths and borders. For the larger varieties, space them at 18 inches and the smaller varieties at 15 inches between the plants. If you want extra thickness in the hedge, plant 2 rows of lavender with the second row plants positioned in the center between the plants in the first row. If planting a double hedge, plant the second hedge 18 inches away for dwarf lavenders and 21 inches away for the larger varieties. When planting against a south facing wall or hedge, position your plants 12 inches away for dwarf lavenders and 15 inches away for the larger varieties. Don't forget that for the dwarf varieties you need to allow from ground to flower tip about 21 inches and for the larger varieties 27 inches. If you are in a smaller garden you may need to plant slightly closer to the obstacle. This does not matter but you will reduce slightly the amount of flower that you achieve on your hedge, and your lavender will tend to get thinner more quickly. flamered 08-05-2005, 10:32 AM Thanks..... Though i didnt find out about where to find the seeds within the plants.... Thanks again.... witchiejeni 08-12-2005, 08:24 AM Growing lavender from seeds can be difficult. I think it's much easier to get them to grow from seedlings you buy from the store. BUT...yeah, that's possible, just get a packet of seeds and follow the instructions. chinikfb 08-12-2005, 08:30 AM Peace....Thanks for sharing....I love lavendar! Blessings.... |
