Hello,

"My" lifer is a considered a violent offender. I have not posted in here yet b/c I usually am in the lifer forum but I found something that could help others and wanted to pass it on.

I learned something very interesting. They are now able to do SPECT imaging of the human brain. This is sort of like a MRI/CAT scan but much more specific. Anyway, as was thought, the brains of people who are considered violent are different than "normal" brains. (The brains of alot of other people with diagnosis are different too. For example ADD, Bipolar, Schizophrenic brains are different from normal).

Here is a link to see it http://amenclinics.com/bp/atlas/ch14.php
The normal brain is blue and is very smooth (in these pics). People with violent behavior had brains that looked like swiss cheese or has alot of red areas.

This proves that the behavior is biologically based.

After medication and psychotherapy SPECT scans were done again and the brains returned to normal and healthy and violent behavior diminished or subsided.

Why is this important?...if your loved one is up for trial, having a SPECT scan may help with defense! It shows that the brain functioning has caused the behavior and not just because he is a "bad person." The SPECT scan could also help on appeal!

I went to a workshop on this and even the presenter ( a neuro-psychologist) was saying that 95% of people in prison should actually be given treatment instead of incarceration. :yay:

The SPECT scan is very expensive. I do not know if insurance covers it. If your man/lady has a public denfender, the state might pay for it. I know in NYC, Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital does them. In CT, Yale Hospital does them. In Chicago, they are done but I can't remember the name of the hospital. They are also done in other parts of the USA.

I don't have any other information than this. I can explain general things about it but nothing more. If you want more you might want to contact the Amen Clinic http://amenclinics.com/ac/

I hope this information can help someone. This is the cutting edge of psychiatry/medicine.
