I need some advice and quickly. Daughter being released in 2 weeks from AZ DOC after many many years, served full sentence, no parole or probation. We were told that she would be going to a halfway house when released so she can get reintegrated into society and get help for substance abuse and mental illness. we were ok with this , as she has institutionalization as an additional factor to deal with. Now it seems that we were lied to,the "halfway house" is in fact a homeless shelter, and no assistance for her problems. Was told that she was evaluated and no longer deemed seriously mentally ill and therefore not eligible for services.(so they don't have to be responsible to find her a program upon discharge???) When I called about this I was told "she has to find her own place to live, she will no longer be our responsibility, and we are not responsible to find her a place to live" DOC not receptive to communicate with family her entire stay, now social worker taking an interest in her trying to place her back east as "better services available there" (no duh!) We no longer live in the state where she had wanted to relocate. I hate AZ and want to get her out of there ASAP, but don't know if she will have enough medicine or even an ID so that we can take her on a plane with us back east. To top this off, I think DOC is using a fake address for records so they can get rid of her. IS AZ DOC allowed to "dump" ther ex-cons on other states?
We are planning to take her back east and try to get her into a program there, but taking chances as there are no guarantees that they will take her.
Do we go ahead and take her and take our chances that she will be accepted into a program? Do we have any recourse against AZ DOC for doing this?
Thanks for any and all help!

If your daughter has reached her sentence end date then there is nothing that can hold her in Arizona. Going to anther state should put her in the same position as she would be if she stayed in Arizona, she should be elligble for the equal to AHCESS (sp?) She should be able to get state help for addiction and food stamps and housing. Be patient with her as it is a mighty transition from prison to the outside world, your love will go a long, long way. Good luck and God bless you...........
