JustApril from the WA forum here :)
I have a question about some of your court lingo as it is different than Washingtons...
I have a cousin in Arizona who was involved in a motorcycle accident last summer and as a result had been facing charges of 2nd degree murder. I followed his court dates for awhile on the county court website, and for awhile there was nothing and then yesterday he had a "Status Conference" and next week he has a "Summary Judgement" Hearing....is that the same as sentencing or does this mean something different?
Any info would be appreciated
Thanks,
April

Status Conferences and summary judgements are civil proceedings and not criminal. It appears that he has been sued in civil court for monetary damages.

Hey April...here's some info I found for you...hope this helps.

Pretrial/Status Conference
The Court may or may not set these conferences. At the conferences, the attorneys will exchange or share information with the court regarding the status of the case and trial preparation. If there is a plea bargain, this is normally the proceeding in which you will enter into the change of plea before the court.

Summary Judgment
Summary judgment is a court rendered decision without a trial because the facts are not disputed, thus a judge can make the decision without weighing the credibility of evidence; judgment without a trial.
