I want to know specific info on federal facilities on the east coast. I have a few friends still in county jails about to go into federal places. I can't find specific info at the BOP website about certain facilities. One is going in at a level 35, so what does that mean?Is that automatic high or med security? They would like educational class and certain things like that. How do I find which places offer which classes and info like that? It is about 5 different people looking for different things. Any help would be great. They want to know which places to pick based on what they offer even if they don't get what they pick

Have they been sentenced yet?
If not...they should be able to get papers from their lawyer or public defender on the locations. I have one that we were given but it is seriously outdated....from 1997! It doesn't tell us much on each location....but it did break it down to what the rated capacity is verses the actual population at that point. That is something to take into consideration.

Classification.....don't quote me on this....but I believe this to be somewhat good...

0-5 points = Minimum

6-8 points = low

9-14 points = medium

15+ points = high

you have to take into consideration that even though ones points may be for example 7....if they have prior escapes or longer sentences...these are some of the things that could affect the security level.

Hopefully this has been of some help. Feel free to ask anything...we don't know it all....but we do have some knowledge around here!

WAIT A MINUTE...THERE MAY BE SOME CONFUSION HERE...

I THINK FABULOUS IS SAYING THAT HIS FRIEND IS A SENTENCING GUIDELINE LEVEL IS 35 WHICH IS USED BY THE JUDGE TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF TIME HE WILL HAVE TO SERVE.

IT LOOKS LIKE kintml2u IS TALKING ABOUT THE BOP DESIGNATION SCORING PROCESS WHICH IS A SEPERATE SET OF NUMBERS.

bop's program statement on the designation process is here:
http://www.bop.gov/progstat/5100_007.pdf

Just cause your friend has a sentencing guideline range of 35 he could still go to a camp or low. Assumming he has no history of significant violence in his PSR and no history of escape(, and other factors described in the above link). If his sentence is ten years or less he would be eligible for camp. If his sentence is is more than ten years he could go to a low.

But take all this with a grain of salt, as the prosecutor could manipulate the designation, or some minor medical need may have him placed in an FMC, or god knows what else (strange things happen as the people here can attest).

What does the lawyer say?

I was a level ?28? and looking at 5-7, probably in a camp. I ended up with a year and a day because of downward departures and I've been designated to an FMC.--- But dont make my example a rule against yours.

Sorry if I thought she was asking about the level....I may have misunderstood it thinking she was asking what locations to look into.
But....hope it is still of some help to narrow the search.

no one gets sentenced until July. So their lawyers should get the info and help with the requests. All the info I can get is helpful right now. The other thing I was wondering was if he is on the East coast will he at least stay in the facilities desginated by the BOP for that region? His lawyer is back and forth right now, all of them are. I have no idea what we are looking at. Thanks for the help.

While there is no guarentee that they will be placed in the same region the BOP reportedly tries to place inmates within 500 miles of the release point and also the bop attempts to adhere to judicial requests.

When your friends are sentenced they should be able to request an institution or at least a state or region. Before they are sentenced their lawyer will have a look at the PSR which will show the sentencing guideline and a lawyer should be able to determine what security level institution your friends would qualify for based upon that knowledge.
(Honestly In my opinion the lawyer should of already told the client what he was looking at or at least a best guess ie... camp/low/med/high and how long)

When my Sweetie was sentenced, the judge ordered that he be placed in the closest facility to his home. Which is only a 15 minute drive for me. He's in a medium facility now, but in 6 months he may be eligible for a low, which is a 3 hour drive in either direction. However, there has been no mention of him being moved further unless he's a security risk...which he's not.

Feds are bad about putting you where they want too. Alot of it i feel is cause of the over crowding issue. Hang in there, you never know.

Read all the posts, and yes, you NEVER know what BOP will decide. My daughte is at SeaTac - which is a MAXIMUM facility with no outside priveleges. Her charge, obstruction of justice, 12 points, 18 month sentence, no criminal history, no drug or alcohol use. 750 miles from us and her son. We had hoped she would serve in AZ as at least her dad is there and I would have seriously considered moving there with the baby this summer. Right after my daughter was incarcerated, many female inmates were placed back to SeaTac from halfway programs, etc., as there was room in their facility, budget issue, won't pay other facility to house.

My son's defender gave me a booklet entitled "FEDERAL INSTITUTIOS SOUTHEAST REGION - FLORIDA SOUTHERN U.S. PRETRIAL SERVICES - Leadership Development Project 2000"
There is no reference to where it is published or how to get an exemplary.

This document shows some details: Overview, Housing, Education,Vocational Training, UNICOR facilitites, Medical and Psychological services, Religion Services, Visiting Schedule, for 20 institutions of the area. If you can get a similar document for your area, it will give you an idea.

In my son's case, he was sentenced to 48 months in camp because of his level and circumstances, but because he is a foreigner subject to deportation, the BOP placed him in LOW security because they consider that deportation is a detainer and will not allow him a camp even when the Judge designated him to a camp.

He is housed in Coleman, Florida (45 miles NW of Orlando) near the place of detention (Miami). It is rumored that those foreigners who don't receive frequent visits will be moved to Atlanta GA to make room for others who have relatives in the Florida area. With this criteria, he could be moved to Alaska.

Un abrazo,
Andrés
