Idaho’s prison population is exploding. It’s putting the state on the brink of crisis.

Several department of corrections employees say it’s only a matter of time before something has to give.

The Women’s Correctional Center in Pocatello is built to house 128 inmates. Currently it houses about 300 and pays 14 different counties to house another 225.

Every Idaho inmate can expect to see as many prisoners as possible behind each locked door.

Idaho is spending more and more money on corrections. Obviously something has got to change, because we can not continue to increase its corrections spending at the current rate.

The problem is said to take between six months to a year because the prison system is so backlogged. That keeps women away from the programs aimed to speed up their rehabilitation and mired in county jails.

They could even build another facility, but if they keep denying and denying parole to everyone, in a few years time they will have the same problem again.
