View Full Version : Hurricane Evacuation ???
txchic 07-18-2005, 09:58 AM I went to see my husband this weekend and he is in Edinburg exactly where hurricane Emily is coming and he mentioned that they may evacuate both Lopez and Segovia units. He also mentioned that he was going to get moved because they were bringing in 300 state jail inmates in and moving TDC inmates. ?????? I called this morning and talked to inmate records and they told me they were not moving anyone today and I asked her about the evacuation and she said they were still waiting on word if they were going to evacuate. ???? How in the world would they do this (1,000 inmates evacuated just from Lopez State Jail) Is there anywhere I could call and get some other info. Thanks girls and have a nice day I know someone can direct me in the right direction.
BrandNewGirl 07-18-2005, 11:25 AM According to the officer at Gist that I spoke to on Saturday, they would load the guys on buses and take them to wherever they could find a unit with a gym large enough to accomodate. They would remain locked down in the gym wherever for approximately a week. They, of course, would not be able to tell you where they were taking them, just that they would be safely moved, and then brought back to their units as soon as the all clear was given.
Hope that helps.

txchic 07-18-2005, 11:33 AM yes - that pretty much answers my question. I was just wondering how in the world they were going to bus that many people at one time and where they would stay. I say let them come home during the hurricane. I promise I will bring him back when the hurricane is over..:D Also I was a little worried. Where would they sleep - eat - etc.
jessnkat 07-18-2005, 11:50 AM It looks like the tip of Texas will get the edge of Miss Emily........let us know if they do evacuate the guys.......
And all in the area - please take care.....
jessnkat 07-18-2005, 12:15 PM And Mo, if she turns and heads to Houston - don't let them take Jess off - I gotta see him next weekend and he'd BETTER be there!!!
txsfmhstn 07-18-2005, 11:00 PM I was wondering what they were going to do about the inmates. I wonder if it will be San Antonio or Beeville, that should be the closest units where they might have room like that for both. Thanks for posting this information, son in Segovia unit. I guess I need to make some calls tomorrow to see what they plan on doing. I will post any information I find out.
earthangel184 07-19-2005, 12:06 AM well to my knowlege, the units in beeville, garza east and west, where my husband is, are already COMPLETELY full, as in busting at the seems full!!! but ya never know, this is TDCJ were talking about here! haha
txsfmhstn 07-19-2005, 06:33 AM From which unit are the TDC inmates being moved from? Segovia or Lopez? From what I understand all the unit are over crowded right now. Which units have gyms? I didn't realize they had those at the units. Oh remember if the inmates are evacuated the mail will be sent to the other unit and will take them longer to get it if you mail anything now. I am going to wait to mail my son his letter until after I know what they are going to do.
witchiejeni 07-19-2005, 07:18 AM I live down in McAllen, one town over from Edinburg. We aren't being evacuated, nor urged to, I wonder why they would evacuate the inmates? All they've told us so far is to expect a "tropical storm wind warning" and lots of rain for this week.
I'll try to keep you updated as to what I hear.
txchic 07-19-2005, 07:57 AM Just an update - I called this morning to Lopez State Jail and I was told that they could not release information if they would evacuate or not ???? I am glad to hear though that they are not evacuating from the nearby towns. Thank you for the information - keep us posted.
vim1946 07-19-2005, 08:22 AM Guys -- here is a great site for anyone that lives in Hurricane Country -- it is the NOAA Hurricane Center -- the guys that fly the planes that go in to the hurricanes work for these guys:

witchiejeni 07-19-2005, 01:10 PM OK...so far we've had a bit of rain and some wind, but nothing major. They are issuing a tornado watch for our area though, but that's to be expected as well.
No worries!
OK...now we are getting another band of gusts in. It's more fun to watch than scary!
txsfmhstn 07-19-2005, 02:39 PM Thanks for the link Vim. Not going to tell us what they plan on doing with the inmates. I know a security risk, whatever! If they get moved the inmate information line will tell us where they are at.
txchic 07-19-2005, 02:58 PM Update:
I called to check and asked for inmate records and they said my husband was still at the unit. But - I asked my co-worker who has a brother that works as a CO in Hondo (Joe Ney Unit and there is another unit there - can't remember the name) and he said that they were working overtime because of the inmates they moved because of the hurricane. So - as far as I can tell it is a typical TDC answer - we don't know.
Thanks for keeping us updated on the weather. If I hear anything else I will pass it on.
witchiejeni 07-19-2005, 07:11 PM Not much going on in the way of weather down here so far. Corpus is getting horizontal rain and they are 2 and 1/2 hours north!
It's been breezy still, but nothing in the way of rain since early this afternoon.
