Thanks

It depends on the prison where you are going. Some offer outside college courses where the instructors come to the prisons (these can be expensive). Mostly, there are continuing education type classes put on by inmates, and of course GED.

I was at FCI-Beaumont Medium and I took an outside Government Class from Lamar college. It was pretty cool however there is no rhyme nor reason to what is being offered.. No degree path or plan, if you know what I mean. They just say there will be this class available and you can take it or not..

One of the more popular classes put on was Spanish I, II & III taught by another inmate, David Ischy. There was American History put on by Bob (good guy) and a bunch of others.. There are also a bunch of legal / paralegal classes put on by inmates.. Some good.. Some horrible..

The institution offered MS Office classes but the teachers didn't know jack. I helped teach it once I got in. The waiting list was pretty long and everything they were running was very old. The BOP is VERY PARANOID about computers and thus you are on a physically isolated network and cannot use/have database software like MS Access or anything that deals with macros, etc.. Pretty silly since the computer room had no access to anyplace else..

There were a bunch of other classes available but most are put on by the inmates... These can be very good, however, as you would be surprised how many of these people are very smart and some have actual teaching experience..

Hi, Fed-ex,
Does it help the prisoners to offer classes? What are the benefits to the prisoner?

Thanks

Besides the GED classes they have a program call Personal Power by Anthony Robbins, I took it while I was there. It helped me soooo much. Also alot of Parenting classes are available and bible classes as well. I'm not sure if this applies for you but I wanted to share that.:)

At Plainfield Correctional Facility in Indiana my boyfriend is taking a GED class that will take 5 months off of his 2 year sentence so actually he is only doing 7 months of his original 24 month sentence.

Well, I think I know the answer to this one, but here goes...specifically, can an inmate get a PHD in physiology (or in any field) while incarcerated at FMC Carswell? Thanks for your time.
