I am curious as to just how many different ( and I say different because we are not society's "norm") couples there are? My husband is black and I am white. I want everyone here to know that there are more out there then what we think. It is more common now then say 20 years ago. Do you notice more mixed couples around where you live now?

I was raised in a small town here in North Texas that had absolutely no black people, no hispanic people...nothing but white people...It was/is so racist that they had the areas KKK meetings outside of the town in a state park. I was not raised to have nor tolerate hatred and I have never dated white men. So to those of you that choose to live your life different than the others in your community. Keep your head up, ignore the ignorance and be happy. :)

Wow. My best friend is in an interacial- gay relationship. She is the greatest. At first she only dated white women and then people say I rubbed on her :D cause now she is with a beautiful black women. Go nay-nay go. When my friends and I go out, we are a melting pot. Let's see, there is a gay male couple, two black and white couples, 1 lesbian-inter racial couple, 1 white-filipino couple, 1 "straight" couple, 1 hispanic-black couple. Boy do we get the stares. I am white and my fiance is black. The problem is that we have fought almost every month since he got locked up 5 1/2 months ago and we may be goign through our final fight. We only knew each other 3 weeks before he got arrested. Interracial relationships are definitely not tolerated in my state, he has had to experience much racism outside and inside prison.

As you can see he is black...and Im white. My son is mixed (not Donalds) In Jersey most of the younger people are not racist..but the older people are..like my GRANFATHER! :(

I'm white, he is black. Where we live it is accepted, well now it is, I used to have people say bad things to me 10-15 years ago but that doesn't happen anymore that I know of. Well it's been a while since I've walked down the street with him so I don't really know but in Los Angeles people are pretty accepting since there are so many races here.

Im mixed (black-white) and my baby is black. I live in London, lots are accepted including interracial relationships. Back in the day when my mum was with my dad it wasnt accepted, but now in the millennium it is totally accepted by most people.

`I'm Black and my husband is Black. (smile) I think people be buggin off IRRs because they don't see too many of them. I believe in areas where there's a lot of that, that it's actually kinda strange seeing same race couples. However, in areas where you see a lot more same race couples and not that many IRRs, some people may get beside theirselves because they're not used to seeing it.

I live in southern NY -- they're out here -- black men with white females and sometimes with a hispanic female but I don't see them that often. When I met my husband in prison in '96 and as I went to different prisons for visit, THAT is where I became exposed to black men with white females -- I had never seen so many IRR couples in my life until I started going to the visit rooms. That exposure got me used to seeing them.

In my time seeing them in the prisons though, not once have I ever seen anyone treat or regard them in a disrespectful way -- never. Not even by the police, which is enuf to make me wonder that if some say they've received disrespect from other visitors or the police at the facilities, is that just their imagination.

Best wishes to you all, particularly and moreso once your men get released. I think when society begins to start seeing a lot more of them out here that THAT'S when people who haven't been accepting of it will start changing to become more accepting. I think it basically boils down to many just aren't used to seeing it.

The White Nationalists, KKKs, and some of the hateful whites in the southern states where slavery was big, I believe they really need to let it go but because they're so stuck in their ways, I can only see them living on. Their hatred is so scarey that if I were white I'd be petrified to date a Black man in the deep south. Petrified that someone in my family or someone who knew my family would fatally harm my man and then destroy his body and just leave him for whoever to find him. A dark road in the deep south can be a very scarey experience for a Black man dating a white girl. He would definitely have to have a cell phone so I could check on him when he wasn't home at night so I could make sure he's okay. Living that way, every day would be too much for me and that's why I'd either have to move to a place where people are less hateful or, just leave it alone all together. So for you deep south girls, your man is in prison now but once he come home, I feel you girls will be very brave because my chicken butt would be scared to death for his life!

My son brought home a baby kitten one day -- the cutest thing ever. However, it kept picking and picking at my cat until my cat wrestled it down, then it would chill for a minute, and then pick on my cat again, until my cat wrestled her down again. Because the kitten was so little and so full of spunk it reminded me of a 5'2 Italian man so I named her Little Salvatore. Because Little Salvatore got to be too much, however, we had to give her away but I'll never forget her. :)

No, seriously, my extended family has become the United Nations and I look to the day when we can all just say "human" in answer to that question. When I was younger and they asaked about race I always checked "other." Now I take an odd sort of pity on the person who is trying to get the statistics right and check "caucasian."

One of my ex's stepdad used to call me "white girl" not to my face but to my ex. It's cool thought because we didn't get along anyways because of other reasons. Almost all of my closest friends that I have been tight with for years are black and race isn't ever even an issue or even every brought up.

I am of Hawaiian, Chinese and Caucasian descent and my guy is half Italian, half German, 100% stubborn. Sad thing is, my guy tans better than I do!!! Hawaii is a total melting pot so you will see lots of interracial relationships. Of course, there are prejudices but for the most part, it's business as usual.

I say that all of us have a little bit of MIXED in us, unless you can go back till the beginning of time on your family tree and track every single person to the same race, culture, and origin.
In some far-off countries it's possible, maybe.....but I tell some of my cousins who say they are Black to take pride in the fact that they are mixture of races.
Just because your skin is dark doesn't mean you automatically check the Black box. My skin is light and we came from the SAME blood line!

People ask me if my youngest son is mixed with Asian because he's light and his eyes are tight. I tell them he gets his eyes from his dad, who is Black. They always look shocked (especially if they're Asian) like I must be kidding! LOL

I am west indian(from the country trinidad and tobago) and my husband is white.. and below is our beautifuldaughter which our love and god gave us.... I think i am PTO's first West indian!! We live in Houston texas so we dont have any problems really.. But there are a few out there and for some odd reason i run in to ALL of them. especially the ones who are shocked when they find out that she is really my daughter and i am not her nanny.. :eek: :mad: !! Of course i always got a smart answer for them all.

Basically i dated out of my race all my life cuz where i live the only other west indians were my family members and i wasnt having that.. :D

Wow there are not too many same race couples here on PTO. Well I am West Indian on my mom's side (she's from Trinidad and her mom is half Portugese and grandmother pure portugese)On my dad's side I am Cuban and African American. I basicaly say I am just black. The only thing is I don't identify with A.A in New York as most of them are from the South. My sweetie is A.A from the south however his nieces and nephews are bi-racial. Here in NYC you see inter racial couples but not too often. The most I would see growing up was spanish and black. To be honest with you all interacial dating was something I felt really weird about but over the years I have grown more excepting of it. I have a close white girl friend who only dates black men so I got use to that. One of my best friends is engaged to be married to a white woman and I accept his love for her. I guess you can just say I am over it. I basically feel like if it does not affect me and mine do you. I also must say I went down south the last holiday weekend and there were lots of mixed couples. The funny thing was there was also many Confederate flags. It was quite strange to me the openess of it. All I kept thinking if it had been NY someone would have taken that flag and wraped it around the owners neck.

I am white with some German, Italian and Irish. My fiance is black. Here in GA (ATL) it is very common; you see it everywhere you turn. You also see a lot of same race relationships too. Basically you can say we are a mix here in the ATL.

I am white and my man is from honduras.. We have been together 4 years. Here in SC interracial relationships are being more accepted everyday.

I am white and my baby is black...I guess it is becoming more accepted here (as well as other places), but you will always have those who do not "approve." But it doesn't matter, it is my life and I will do as I please!

My husband and I are both mixed. We are both French, Spanish, Native American and Afo- American.

This is my first time posting in this room although I've visted a few times--anyway Talofa,:wave: I'm Samoan/Figian and my lifer is black.

We are both of the human race!! However, the state of Virginia would designate me as white (blonde hair, blue eyes) and has chosen to designate him as black (dark hair, brown eyes) despite our matching skin tones. (LOL), We laugh though because people at church are always trying to tell his mother and I how much we look alike. We have a combined family of his two kids and my two kids. ( maybe we will be blessed with one of our own). When I take the kids out people just assume they are siblings and I am the mom to all four.

My man is black and I am Italian. We are both extremely attractive people. Where we are from in AZ... you see alot of bi racial couples... but you still get some stares. There is alot of hate out here from black woman who do not like white woman dating "their men"... and my baby says he gets some **** for being with me, mostly because he is so fine and woman of ALL colors want him, so they try to down our relationship. I get alot of men trying to pull the race card when hitting on me too, but it is SO stupid and I just look at them and say "U will NEVER get p***y (edited per PTO policies) from ANY girl unless u come up with some better pick up lines than that." When I first met his family, they were cool with me and showed ALOT of love, but some of his sister's friends I have heard talk **** behind my back. When we were at a family gathering, we were all playing spades, and I beat this black lady, and she had a fit about the "white girl" winning, she swore up and down i was cheating... it was too funny! I just laugh because people assume I can't play cards because of my skin tone!! Also, recently his sister told me that she had never wanted her brother to be with anything but black woman, but that now I am the ONLY one she wants to see her brother with! It is awesome when you can change someone prejudice just by showing them who you are. My family on the other hand.. NEVER had a problem with my man... they are the most wonderful people in this world! And taught me to not even know what "color" is. We were all created by God... so what's the big deal?

Yes, I do notice more interracial couples now in my area than even 10 years ago. I was born and raised in Springfield, Tennessee. This is a very small town and interracia couples were a big NO NO. Over the past years I have seen more of this openly. I for one am in an Interracial relationship. My fiancee' is incarcerated about 3 hours from me, but will be released on parole on August 21, 2006. The prison he is at is to me racisist. We are singled out quiet often.

Also, my brother is married to a woman of color and they have two small adorable children. When others take a peek or talk low about us, I simply ignore it. I'm happy, he's happy and that's all that matters.

I live in Owensboro KY and I have noticed a few interracial couples but feel this city is backwards to start with. I am originally from Biloxi MS and there are more interracial couples than one would believe there. Like I said love has no color and the world needs to realize this. Might be a way better place to live. He makes me so happy that my family that knows has accepted that they cannot change how I feel or control who I love.

He is from louisville, kentucky and that is where I am moving to soon especially since he is locked up in kentucky. And when we visit there I notice it is very common there! you guys are right love knows no color!

He is Mexican, I am white. This is going to sound kinda weird, but I didn't even think about it being an "inter-racial" relationship. That we were actually two different races. I guess I thought of it more as a cultural thing than race. Either way, though, I just love him! My ex-husband was black so the race thing was obvious...he was also from a very rural area which was an even bigger difference than our color ever was!

My David is a beautiful black man, and I am white. Two out of three of my white sons accept David, but my middle son won't even mention his name without saying nasty things about him. Him being locked up doesn't help much either. I love him so much, I'm in it with him forever no matter what. I love David for his heart, not his skin color. We have been together for 4 1/2 years and we've married for 2 of those years. I love my husband to the fullest and that will never change. Yeah we get the crazt looks and stares but its all good because that wont change anything. In my husbands culture, they kind of dont like when their men date outside their race, but again as long as we are happen then thats all that matters. Yes!There are a lot of "us" Beautiful White Women who Love Strong Loving Black Men. My Fiance is Black/White mixed. If you did not know his heritage, you would not know this. He is really darker than I am. Of course, I am of French decent, and therefore, whiter than most. I do find that his Mother and Sister are not accepting of our relationship. Does anyone have this or similar situation? I am from New Hampshire, but live in Maryland, and I do not know or feel like that way about anyone.... It frustrates me... the hatred. I just want them to know me and accept our relationship. I am not asking for their love. My husband-to- be says that once they know me they will love me. I am not sure about this.... My baby finally mainlined a few months ago and he's been down for 393 days! At first I was denied for visiting but after a month of clearing the bull**** up, i was finally approved. YAY! The minute he mainlined, I was there.... And still am... EVERY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY to see my baby!! I am STRONGLY DEVOTED to my man! Now IR-lly, I am 100% Korean and my fiancé is Italian, Scottish and Irish(mostly Italian). And majority of the men I've dated have been Caucasian. I am his FIRST EVER, IR relationship.... At the start of our lifelong journey together, I used to ask him if it felt awkward or weird dating outside his race. His answer was always, "NO... It doesn't feel weird or anything like that, but it is different." During our first handful of visits, I could literally feel the glares from the people, ALL AROUND US. EVERYONE.. Gawking at the sight of us holding hands. As if we were commiting a deadlly sin!! He could tell it was bothering me so he gave me a few words of advise:
"Pay them no mind babe, their opinions of our relationship and who I choose to be with, is of no regard to me. I'm in love with YOU for who you are INSIDE... And it just so happens that you're Asian and I'm White."
I asked if anyone's given him a hard time about it? "Well someone did approach me and comment on the fact of you not being White and that I probably shouldn't have you come visit me and just stick to letters. So I told him that I am NOT ashamed to have you as my ol' lady, nor would I EVER deny my love for her. I am very proud to say she is my soon to be wife. Anyone's got a problem, tell them to come talk to me." Hasn't been spoken of or brought up as an issue since.
Believe me, I know, it's difficult this day in age to be an IR couple, inside or outside the prison walls..... As long as a solid bond is eminent between the two, nothing can come between the forces of true love.. Keep your head high and be proud of who you are and who you're with... =)

In response to Jesses Girl..... Listen to your man.... don't worry about what other people think... it is not their life, it is yours. If you love your man/woman, whatever their race, it is not about color it is about feelings and emotions and no one should give a DAMN about what other people think about it. I've been in IRs for 30 years of my life and I've NEVER been ashamed that I love a black man! If someone else has a problem with it, that is exactly what it is THEIR PROBLEM!!

My current husband is not ashamed, he actually likes to flaunt the fact, especially toward other women who give us that 'what you doin' with her look'. I don't approve of his behavior, but that is him. I really wish he would get over that attitude too, but, point is, at least he is not ashamed or embarrassed about our racial differences and neither am I.

When we hug and kiss on our visits, it is just the two of us there as far as I'm concerned.

Although it is not unexpected to see an interracial couple in Los Angeles, it is faaaaar from the norm! I don't see very many white people in my neighborhood so I don't many see black/white couples until I go to areas where white folks are. And no disrespect to those involved in interracial relationships, but I am bothered when a white woman is "loving her Black man". Why can't she just be loving her man? I'm a Puerto Rican born in Hawaii and my Husband is Black born in New Jersey. He was military and we met in Hawaii. Hawaii is a very liberal state so no problems. Moved to Fort Knox Kentucky. The areas arround the post were ok because lots of military...but further out ie: Louisville etc were very prejudiced. The usual long stares and sales people acting like we were not together at the registers. Than moved to Richmond, Va. the people are more suttle (or so they think) but we still get the looks!!!! Any way it doesn't faze us anymore. Our son is mixed and doesn't see color, he hates if anyone asks what race his current girlfriend is these days. Love can overcome anything or so I beleive.

This black woman is not hiding as you put it, My fiance is white and I am black, and I love him to death. And who you fall in love with has nothing to do with how smart you are and what race you are. My fiance and I both educated people. There are different circumstances as to why people are incarcerated so its not fair for anyone to judge .

In case you might not have noticed. The subject of this particular thread is "interracial couples." I think that is probably why you may not hear from black women as much. It seems, historically that it is more common for black men to venture out of their race than black women, particularly in the southern states. However, time and society are changing that, and it is becoming more common to see black women with men of different races. As Joey's girl states.... "there are all sorts of different circumstances as to why people are incarcerated." And, once again, let me remind you...... love has no color, nor limitations.... the consequence of prison can befall anyone, regardless or race or social or economic status. So, please don't disparage those of us who love who we love because they are incarcerated or because of their race. Smile!!!

I am black (African), and he is white. We have been together a long time so it does not bother me when people stare. The COs have still not gotten used to us and first time visitors will stare through out visitation. Everyone else is friendly but now and then an inmate will make a rude comment about me but he knows how to handle his business. Race is not an issue for me. I thank God I am in a relationship with a wonderful man and my family adore him.

Well, I am white and my husband is black. We are opposites in more than just race...he's 6'9" 280 lbs and I'm 5'6" 105 lbs ....he was raised in the ghetto and I was raised on a small farm...but I am a red head so I can keep him in line...lol...it is more acceptable now than it used to be, even when I dated a black guy in school it was harder for some people to accept but I live in a small town, but fortunately as time has went on it is alot better. I couldn't imagine living 50 or 60 yrs ago, I see older couples and try to imagine what kind of things they went through just to be together. I have a great family though so that makes it better.

I cried for a week and hadnt had food in my stomach. My feelings for him didnt change. My feelings for him grew stronger as he related to me what had happened in his life. This is not the kind of man i imagined to love and spend my life with, my love for this man is unconditional. His life changed when he met according to him. He called me his Hero without even trying. He will be back in my life next year, on parole (again) as a convicted SO. It sure is a tough life but i am commited to be his advocate, until he became a truly free man. His blackness made my womaness complete. I am even 17 years his senior. He said that is just a number.

I drove eight hours, and got too see him for 15minutes. :( We kissed a peck lasted maybe two seconds. The Warden came and terminated my visit. They claimed My visit was terminated because I am only a minor, (16) :p mind you i had full permission from my father wih a notarized letter but both my boyfriend and I knew it was about race.:angry: They made me leave and took him out to the back threatning to beat him and trying to charge him with lude and lucivious crime. It seems like it is getting very common to have inter-racial relationships. since there are 30+pages of responses here. I was married to a white man for 19 years and after the divorce dated more white men than black men, but it was about finding the right guy, not race. He never dated a white woman before me. It's getting more common where I currently live in Tennessee, but we still get all kinds of looks from some folks. We ignore it. He used to get mad, but I told him that it's their ignorance and their problem and we should not let their stupidity ruin our day. :p The bottom line is that he makes me happy. I am happier now, even though he is so far away, than I ever was without him. My family has no problem with his race and his family seems to love me too. a few in my family have more of a problem with the prison situation. They like him as a person and understand that even good people do stupid things sometimes, but they are worried about me getting hurt. I am a big girl though and I have chosen to go through this with him. I think we will end up stronger on the other end. :)

I educate them as best I can. Prison does not "make the man"...the strong, determined man can ride through prison and come out a better person.

I know exactly what you are saying ... my parents were the same way at first. Wanting to disown me for haviong a mixed baby. But of course then I was only 18 so thery were completly upset for a lot of reasons, especailly it being my senior year they thought I wouldn't graduate, but I showed them and actaully graduated before she was born! Well long story short is that they were made pretty much until I had her, and once she came out things changed!! They were all happy grandparents and now until this day regret feeling that way towards my ex. I have 3 biracial daughters (mexican & black) and they are the world to them, especially my oldest because she is the oldest grandchild and there was just her to spoil for 4 years until the next grandchild arrived. I guess because I am Mexican and there dad is black it is more common in Cali. So hopefully in time things can change, good luck.

I have not had an issue with being an inter racial couple, from my family, the only issue we have had was one of his female friends met me and threw a fit because I was white. Needless to say we are nine years strong and he is no longer friends with her! I think you can't help who you love and there should be no stipulation on your race. Everyone bleeds red and is capable of love therefore we are all people.

I think it made the white judge and d.a. mad when I showed up for the sentencing because they told me "I needed to be locked up too". When I go visit him we are the only IR couple in visitation for his unit. Funny as it may be, it took them 3 months to "verify" our marriage license for a conjugal visit. We finally got one a week before he goes before the parole board. Hopefully this will be over soon because the IR thing can make things worse.

If we don't act like it we will always be a racist country. I am so glad I lived to see a black man become President because that means we are headed in the right direction. The only reason the black population in prison is so much higher than the white one is because of the racist cops and judges. Not because they do more things wrong.

A lot of people I went to school with have been in interracial relationships... but, you go about 30 minutes south and you get a lot of people who wouldn't want him to be with me... you go 30 minutes north and you'd see a lot of people who wouldn't want me to be with him. It sucks. We're moving as soon as he's done with all his parole.

They do still have KKK meetings at city hall and on Martin Luther King Jr. day they didn't have a parade for him but instead had a parade for the guy (I can't think of his name right know) who killed MLK Jr. So before he got locked up we always got dirty looks and even know with my kids because there pretty dark and obviously mixed I have a lot of older white people looking at me and my kids with that look in there eyes. But I hold my head high and laugh cause they can't break me!!

I agree with what you said about the older folks. When my fiancee was at KVSP, during our visits, we would receive some very "Unapproved Looks" from mostly older hispanic women. I also noticed that African American guys would look "Surprised" when my Fiancee would come over to the visiting table and kiss me. Even when I was in processing, when I'd hear my fiancee's last name called and my children and I would walk up to the CO's, they would look at the form again and repeat my fiancee's last name as if I had mistakenly walked up there. My two sons besides Black, are also half Hispanic. My Fiancee is their stepdad and we love him dearly.

It is very common here on the East coast where I live - I myself am interracially married. It causes its problems, but is becoming a lot more prevalent.

He's white from Mississippi and I'm black from Ohio. We have been together for 4 years. We met at a little country bar. He's very fair with platnum blonde hair and blue eyes and I am dark chocolate with Brown eyes. My family excepted us until he got arrested and ended up going to prison. Now my mom says leave him and dad doesn't say anything. My brother and friends are cool with it. Since we met in Florida and his family is in Mississppi, they have neve met me, but I call his sister to be a go between for communication between him and his family. It did take him a couple of years to tell them "guess who's coming to dinner":lol:
Anyway, they say they are cool with it. For awhile it was a big issue between us, he didn't want to tell them at first because a lot of his family had ties with the KKK and he didn't want me and my daughter(not his) hurt or harrassed.
Since he's been locked up he has had to deal with prejudice from one cellmate and another guy. The cell mate thought that since he looked like he could a part of the AN ( Aryan Nation) that he would make some stupid I hate niggers comment and learned real quick that he picked the wrong guy to mess with. The black guys haven't given him any trouble.

I was just thinking about this the other day, how this subject has never even been brought up or talked about of between me and my fiance (he is black, I am white). But in my previous IRR's this was something we would talk/joke about.

ive asked family and supposedly were mixed with native american & i think caucasian on my mothers side, and my dad wants to be funny and say french and whatever else cuz he likes to be crazy... on both sides EVERYONE is a different shade, for the most part, lol... anyways, my boy is from ohio, and one day he called home (im in maryland) and his moms boyfriend or whatnot answered and got to talking (on speakerphone, mind you) and asked him if he was "still messin around with that nigger-girl". i couldnt help but bust out laughing, i guess out of shock and just how silly it sounded. he heard me & said he meant no disrespect and was laughing n bein silly, like, thats just what they call us or somethin (um, ohkay?!), lol. it was a weird conversation. i always feel like i should take more offense to things, but whatever, their ignorance isnt gonna wind me up, i was happy with my boy at the time, nothin was gonna bring me down... :D

but yeah, im born'n'raised in california, so the race thing ive never really experianced. now, being in MD, oh yes. its like a known statement that i "only date white boys", which isnt really by choice, thats just what ive happened to end up with, and it not being the 'norm' here, ive gotten that label... &i dont really care. :p .actually, its really crazy, the only response i remember getting when he was here, was _3_ different strangers on different occasions (in the time period of ONE month, lol) commented us just on how happy we looked. once i noticed him looking at someone while we were ordering food & i turned and looked and smiled to them, and a few seconds later they felt the need to apologize for looking at us like that but said it was only cuz we looked so cute n i guess so we didnt think they were being racist or somethin, heh... i will always remember that. :o

I am hspanic and my husband is black. Not uncommon where I'm from, more mixed kids than you would think.

My fiance is mixed with italian and spanish and I am mixed (my dad is Guyanese/Trini & Indian) and my mom is Jamaican and Scottish. We are very accepted!:)
