I'm not sure where to post this so I'll try here:
My incarcerated friend has requested that I try to obtain information on what (if any) kind of legal or financial assistance may be avaliable during incarceration to help get a "jump start" on his financial obligations or debts he aquired during his trial and incarceration. He is several thousand in debt and wanted to know if it was possible to file banckruptcy or seek financial assistance (?) He is serving a three year sentence in Virginia, with two felony offenses.
I have been able to find assistance for educational purposes, and financial assistance for the family of those who are incarcerated, but not necessarily assistance for those who are incarcerated. Does he have to wait until his sentence has been served to seek financial guidance or can he begin this reconstructive process while incarcerated? Any info would be appriciated-thank you!

I'll bet he has to wait until he's out. I'm thinking that nobody is going to give financial help to a convicted/incarcerated felon. However, perhaps there is an organization out there who can at least give you good advice. Do a search "financial assistance for inmates" or some such thing. Maybe contact your local court house and see if anyone there can lead you in the right direction. Perhaps talk with a parole officer and ask what assistance is available for when an inmate get out - and then ask what, if any, help is available while he's in prison.
I hope you get some answers!

Thanks for the insight, I'll look into some of that, haven't had much luck so far but have been encouraged to see there are lot's of post release programs out there for support.
Thanks for your comments!
