I have a former associate/friend who was sentenced to time in Tutwiler Women's Prison in Wetumpka. I tried to write her to encourage her, but my letter was refused because I didn't have a dorm number on there (I did have the AIS number). When I called Tutwiler, they said only SHE can provide me with that, they couldn't. How in the world can I get it if she has no idea I need it? Any suggestions? :help:

I am sorry that they did not give you the dorm number. That is stupid! But, it doesn't surprise me.
I don't know how you would get it....is there someone you could ask...a family member or an attorney? I hope someone comes along with some better ideas!
Welcome to PTO!

I ran into that problem with Tutwiler trying to send a Christmas card once. If you don't find another way (like the grapevine) I'd be tempted to call the DOC's main office in Montgomery and register a complaint (the number is in a sticky in the ADOC - What You Need to Know subforum). It's insane to expect someone to give you their dorm number when they don't even know you are trying to send them something, and Tutwiler is the only ADOC facility I know of that doesn't at least let a few pieces of mail go like that to the inmate before they start returning them for no dorm number.

Call back and ask to speak with the Mail Room. I'll bet their records are computerized, so if you give them name of the inmate and the inmate's number, they may tell you how they want you to address your letters. Just be very nice to whom ever you speak with and ask nicely. No need to tell them that you'd already called and the person refused to give you the info! I've found that if I ask questions in the right way, they give me answers.

If anyone knows the dorm number of these two Tutwiler inmates, I need it so that I can write them. They both are serving 25-year sentences. Shantel most likely is in a medical type dorm.
Shantel LeShay Williams #235505
Shanesta Tate Lewis #237189
If anyone from Tutwiler has access to this and knows either of these girls, please tell them Deborah Ellis is trying to send them mail, but it is being refused because I do not have their dorm number. They may write me at this address: (personal mailing address & email address removed per PTO policy - member may be contacted via Private Messaging on PTO for addresses)
Thank you and God Bless!
