My brother was sent to Folsom State Prison approx 8 weeks ago and has finally contacted me to give me his address and to let me know that he's being parolled in early August. Here's my questions:

The prison address is in Repesa, CA, is this the old or new Folsom, or are they one in the same and are sometimes referred to as old or new Folsom?

He said his time was short in Folsom since he has zero new charges and was only in for a violation of paroll. Is this accurate information they told him??
(I thought parollee violators, in my location - Central CA, were kept in Traci's DVI facility??)

MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION:
I just recd a letter from him that said he isn't entitled to receive the $200 "Gate Money" when he leaves since he doesn't have new charges added other than the violation and hopes he has enough money accumulated from his current prison job ($1.10 per day) to purchase a bus ticket to make it home. He says he won't mind hitch-hiking if it isn't too far. Doesn't every inmate have entitlement to "Gate Money"? They won't provide him a one-way bus ticket as I've been told by some sources I checked with? I'm getting way too many different answers and the prison phone number puts me on hold for 40 min or more and won't ever take me off hold to help. CAN SOMEONE WITH ANY KNOWLEDGE OR PAST SIMILAR EXPERIENCE TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW? Thanks!

Hello,

Unfortunately, I will only be able to answer your question about Old versus New Folsom. There are two prisons next to each other. Old Folsom is the second oldest prison in California, built in 1880. It is primarily a level 3 prison. It's mailing address is P.O. Box 715071 Represa, CA 95671-5071. If that is the address you were given, then he is at Old Folsom.

California State Prison - Sacramento (New Folsom) was built in 1986. It is a level 4 prison. If the mailing address is P.O. Box 29 Represa, CA 95671 then he is at New Folsom. There could be some numbers before or after the 29 in the P.O. Box number.

My son is at Old Folsom, so I know absolutely that mailing address. The address for New Folsom I got off of the web.

Hope this helps... Charme

I do know when they get out, if there is nobody to pick him up, they will take you to the nearest bus depot. You have to purchase your own bus ticket. No free rides except off of the prison grounds. I have even heard of getting a ride to the airport if they have an airplane ticket. As far as the gate money goes, it is normally $200. But, they have to be in there for a certain amount of time. Like at least 5 months or so. Otherwise, it is somewhere in the area of $1.10 a day (for gate money).

Is it illegal to hitchhike in California?
