Joy, I don't know about correspondence courses for it, but I know here in FLA that all the prisons offer GED courses. If an inmate doesn't have a high school diploma, they are required to attend the GED classes. My husband got his that way back in the '80's, now is having to do it again, because he got his before computers were used. So he will probably be the first inmate in FLA history to have 2 GED certificates.

Have the inmate ask his councelor. Most prisons offer the test and some will take time off for taking it.

Joy,
I've had some experience with the ged program in MO. It is mandated in our state and is a condition of parole. I have looked around and find a lot of internet ged programs. A person can order the books needed to study for the GED (I could provide the publishers etc.). It can be self taught and is designed for that really (I have used the books). The problem lies with the testing which is very strict. It would depend on which state the prison is in. Let me know if I can help further.

I guess I should have added more information. A guy on Death Row wants to finish his education, but alas, Death Row inmates are not offered education. That was why I was wondering if there was a correspondence that he could do to get it anyway.

I think that's excellent, it gives the inmates an opportunity to continue their education so there will be better opportunities out there for them when they are released.

I think there should be a way to get your GED through correpondence, just like you can do any kind of course by mail. I'll see what I can find and let you know

Joy.. this is a total long shot but let me put it out there anyway. In my city you can go through a program offered by a community college which allows you to obtain your actual high school diploma for no charge as long as you are 25 or older. Apparently you are matched up w/ a local teacher who evaluates where you are including life & work experience. then you are given a "curriculum" so to speak. It is a list of objectives you must meet to qualify for a degree. You might not find a similar program but may have some luck initiating one?? You never know who you could find willing to help!!

Now that's a thought. Maybe getting someone to kind of "sponsor" him and help him achieve his goal. What a wonderful idea!!! I'll let you know what I find out.

My BF just took his GED test in jail. He has spent almost all his time inside focused on learning, which I think is great. He should get the results pretty soon, he is going to continue on and get the credits he needs for a high school diploma. I think everyone should have this opportunity.

it sounds like your b/f turned a bad situation in a 'good' one.

Unfortunally family is not allowed to attend to the graduation. I know that they even cancelled the graduation 'party' in certain prisons

Good for your boyfriend!! I agree everyone should have this opportunity-

people in prison need to have opportunities to further their education and vocational skills so that they are better equipped to make it in the community when they are released, and not return to a life of crime because they have no other options
