How do I find if an inmate is incarcerated in the South Dakota Prison system?
You can call the South Dakota Department of Corrections Central Records office at (605) 367-5190 or (605) 367-5140 for that information.
Can I find information on people incarcerated in county jails or other state prison systems from that office?
No. They only have information on inmates in our prison system. You would have to contact the particular county jail or the other state prison systems for that information.
Can I find information on particular SD inmates on this website?
No.
South Dakota has conflicting statutes in place regarding the release on inmate information. Some statutes require notification to victims of prisoner releases to parole, work release, minimum custody status, discharge, escape and furloughs while others restrict what information on inmates can be released.
An attempt was made in 2000 to change state law to allow for a web searchable database on inmates, but the Legislature rejected the bill.
