Many of us drive LONG distances to visit our loved one.....we all know that the state of Michigan has no interest in making life comfortable for you and your loved one......but how close COULD he/she be if it were possible?????


My husband is currently 59 miles from home.....much better than the 200 miles I used to drive.

There are 2 prisons closer.....a camp just 15 miles from home...right across the river from where I used to work. The other is in Lapeer.......50 miles. He can't go to the camp because of his conviction.....he has to go to a Secure Level I when he gets to that level. He tried to get to Lapeer, but he got sent to Saginaw.........its not much father.

How about you? For those of you who don't feel comfy in posting your exact whereabouts.......just tell us the distances!!!!

I think the closest one to me would be 9 hours away near Detroit. Kinross was 12 hours away. Right now where he is, I dont actually know where it is (Jackson). Hopefully not for long. His release date is suppose to be Wednesday and there will be a delay though its not specific as to what the delay is or for how long. Its all too far away but I will get there if I have too.

Closest to me is 10-12 miles. He can't go there as he has a spawn in his file. One of his first cousins works there and she had it put in there when he first went in....which really sucks....He was on his way up here transferring last Xmas time and that's when we found out what she did....He's about 5 hours away.

Lapeer is definately the closest. Only a 15 minute drive and I got spoiled having him there for 3 years until we filed a state complaint against the doctor there for nontreatment and as a retaliation were sent to Kinross for a year and a 1/2. Now I have to drive an 1hr. 20mins. to Carson City. Amiko

I LIVE ABOUT 15-20 MINUTES FROM ST. LOUIS' PRISONS.

Tom lives in standish right now.That is about 1 and a half hours away form me.Lapeer is about 25 minutes away from me and we are trying to get a transfer there.But he thinks he has a spawn there as well.His point screening is being looked at as we speak and same with his transfer.But Standish doesn't usually send to lapeer,only saginaw(for his level after point screening)But still closer.

My husband is currently in Camp Kitwen and I live in Kalamazoo. It's about an 11 hour drive for me. I haven't been able to visit too much this past winter because of the weather and the fact that it costs me about $200 each time I do go. Hopefully I'll be able to see him again soon. The closest prison to me is Jackson, I guess, which is about 45 minutes from me. But... he is SO totally happy with the Camp atmosphere, that I wouldn't want him to be closer if he wouldn't be happy. Is that true love or what !?!

Ionia prisons are closest to me. My husband is in Marquette, a 12 hour drive.

My friend Mike is 2hours and 20 minutes away, and there's a correctional fac. within 25 minutes of me. He's been there already before and is trying to get transfered back.

The closest prison to me is jackson or coldwater, luckily my husband is in jackson but absolutely hates it. I personally wish he were in coldwater but at this point I'd rather him be anywhere else than jackson

I got really lucky. I was scared when my boyfriend was placed that it would be far away, but he's right here in Jackson at Southern Michigan Correctional Facility or JMF for short. It's still about a 30 minute drive but I live out in BFE so that's only normal. I drive the same distance to get to my job so it's not that big of a deal I guess. He's a level 2 though and this prison is the worst that I've heard of for this level because when they turned it from a level 4 to a level 2, they just lowered all of the prisoners levels that were still in there. So instead of being in with less violent or dangerous offenders, a lot of them are murderers and such. It's still run like a level 4 for the most part, too, and they just modified it to include both 2 and 4 prisoners. Pretty sad, huh? The best that I've heard of is in the UP and they are allowed to have visits and picnics outside and everything, but that's like a 12 hour drive from here, so I'm pretty happy where he is and so is he. Smiles!

To anyone: What's a spawn? I've never heard of it until I was reading in this forum? Apparently it's not a good thing.

My boyfriend was at jackson and he has said it sucks...But he said that is where he had to be tough.Just to TRY(I say it loosley)and make it!

I am closest to the prison in Standish but..... I'm still trying to get my BF transferred to here(MI) from PA like THAT will ever happen :rollseyes: so I drive about 8 hrs to Pittsburgh,PA every couple weeks or so.....but its closing so who knows how far I'll be driving soon :(

Rob is currently 1 hr and 20 mins away, but Lapeer is definately closer to me. About 10 minutes away. I drive by it to see him........lol.

My everything is in Jackson rgc........has been there for @36 days.......he is approximately 2 hours away.......he has to get a "job" to receive visitors........I haven't seen him for over 2 mos after being with or talking to him daily for 2 yearrs...I'm in serious withdrawl over here.....

I am within an hour drive of Ojibwa, Baraga and Kitwen. When my son was in MI, he did most of his time downstate, primarily at I-Max, 10 hours away. Shortly before he got out, he was in the U.P. at Kinross. Now he is NY, a 21 hour drive.

The closest prison to me is Jackson, about 45 minutes away from me. I know my husband will be going there for reception (how long does that generally take anyway?), but I don't know where they are sending him from there. Will it take long to be able to see him? He should be transferred out of Washtenaw County Jail the end of August.

He is in Lapeer AKA Thumb Correctional which is an hour and 15 minutes away. He basically went there to be close to his Mother. He thought to transfer to Macomb to be closer to me, but changed his mind. Mound or Ryan would be the closest . He may soon be transferring to Saginaw which I know nothing about, but if he does I know I will.

I think I have you all beat!!! My hubby is at Brooks in Muskegon and its a 3,000 mile drive for me - one way. While it would be a tad closer for him to be in the UP it would be further away from what little remaining family he has in Michigan. Right now they are a 3 hour drive away - which in my eyes would be wonderful for me - I'd go every weekend if I could...but if he went to the UP it would be a 6 to 8 hour drive and he'd never see anyone. As close as they are - they only get there about every 6 or 8 weeks...which just kills me...I'd give anything to be that close. I make it to see him once...maybe twice a year if finances permit. This year my son is getting married and I may not be able to afford to go and see him and I am sick at the thought that it will be another year if he doesn't get paroled. I don't know how I will tell him. Be thankful that you are as close as you are even as bad as it is...walk a mile in someone else's shoes as the saying goes...mine are only a size 7 but some days they feel like 27...isn't life interesting...the path of life has many curves and bends and bumps...I think I've become a pretty good navigator.

My guy's at Parnall in Jackson which is 1 1/2 hours from me and I live 20 minutes or so from the St. Louis prisons.

Well, Chris is at Bellamy Creek in Ionia which is about 2 – 2 ½ hrs away from me on the outskirts of Detroit...So, Ryan or Mound would be awesome, they're like 20 min. away...Even Macomb wouldn't be too bad at 45 min. away! But, like my baby told me, once they get ya in Ionia, they own ya! lol

MY hubby as many of you know is about 4.5 hours away from me at Straits; He was at Crane previous to that and hated the conditions. He was at Muskegon from 2001-2004 but this is where he caught the threaten behavior ticket at; Ionia, Muskegon, and Carson City are all close but my husband has spawns at Ionia and Muskegon and can't return there until the guys he got into with have been transferred or released. He is hoping to transfer after Oct and is shooting for Carson City which is only about 45 minutes......

Well, since I take a plane, something close to Detroit would be good. ;)

well i have michigan youth correctional facility about 2 miles from my house and I also have the trv center less than a mile from my house, west shoreline correctional facility is and hour and a half and then there is oaks which is about an hour also.. my boyfriend is at westshoreline.

The Jackson facilities are probably the closest to me - 45 minutes or so.

I'm about 30 miles from Oaks in Eastlake

I am about 5 minutes at the most away from all the Jackson prisons. I live right off of Cooper St. My fiance is at Cassidy Lake SAI Bootcamp in Chelsea. About twenty minutes away. He used to be at Straits CF which was a 5 hour drive.

My ex is in Macomb County Correctional. I am in the downriver area. I haven't had a chance to get out there. He was just placed there two weeks ago, before that he was at Jackson. I am waiting to get the application to visit. Does anyone no if they are allowed to send letters to P.O. Boxes??? I did some research and it seems to only be an hour and a half drive for me, maybe less haven't taken the trip. Can't wait to see him though. Always love him, never no what's gonna happen when the time comes...

My husband was at Boyer Road Correctional facility in carson city but just got moved to Bellamy Creek correctional facility in Ionia which is about 45 minutes away. not too far to drive. He is waiting on boot camp so i'll only get to see him for about 2-3 more weeks.

My finacee' just left Bellamy Creek, had a week stay at Lapeer now he is in Pine River.

i am in st. joseph and my baby is in new haven 256 miles away. there are prisons in jackson as well as coldwater and muskegon. i have been trying to find out if he can file for a hardship to get moved closer to home. it is a very long trip and i have to take 4 different highways to get there. he was in ypsilanti till they moved him to new haven. my first trip to new haven, i ended up at the bridge to canada and about flipped out. i was scared out my mind. i wish they would move him closer to home. i would be able to see him more, and not be so worried driving such a long distance. it really sucks that he is so far away, because of gas prices i have had to miss some visits cuz i cant afford the gas.

My husband is in Jackson which is only about a 40 minute drive from me but TRV or Huron valley are both in the same city I live in and about 10 minutes away.

My son is in Adrian Mich and there is one in Coldwater which is 12 or 13 miles away. I drive 122 miles round trip and I am scared to death with winter coming on.He is in a level 1 and they are trying to put him in a level 2 or level4 because he needs meds, instead of sending him to coldwater are they any thing I can do to help get transfer to coldwater. I am a window on a fixed income am not working right now just get money coming in once a month. any help would be greatly appreicated

I've not visited any of the prisons yet, but I believe Coldwater is the closest to me. About an hour. My man is near Traverse City, and I've been told to expect a 4 hour drive. He says he may get transferred again. He spent 7 weeks at the Egeler facility before he moved to Pugsley.

The nearest prison to me is about 5 miles away. I live close to all the Jackson prisons. My guy has been to Macomb, Adrian, Standish, Ionia, Brooks and a multitude of other ones before I met him. for the last year I have been driving 1-2.5 hrs once a week to see him. He is enroute somewhere today. I don't know where he will end up. I would love it if he ended up in Jackson but I'm not holding my breath!

My sweetie is over the bridge in Marquette; 14 hours round trip by car, 36 hours round trip by greyhound. The closest prison to me is Ryan and Mound - a 7 minute drive if I time the lights right. But both are level 2 and up. So Macomb would be the next -- 30 whole minutes.

My husband is at Kinross, I live in The Netherlands so it's a long trip, I try to come over twice a year to visit him

I live in Jackson and my husband was incarcerated right here. He put in a transfer because the prison here sucks and he thought it would help his time go by faster. They moved him to St. Louis and I think it is about 1 1/2 hours away. They took away our visits so I can't see him anyways so I guess it doesn't matter how far away he is.

I used to be farther from my man and the closest places were Ionia, Muskegon, and coldwater facilities. Now it's all the Ionia facilities since I live about 7-10 miles from there now. Yup made the move and it's great!
It's almost harder because I'm so much closer to him but still can't see him anymore then the visits that are allowed! LoL*z We're never happy! But I am!

Ionia has I think three prisons, that is about 15 to 20 minutes away, tops....it would be great if my man was in Ionia instead of Muskegon....

i have to say i live in jackson, so there are a few, the closest to me is the one on elm st which is the cotton facility, which is about 5-7 miles away from my house.. but he was transferred to pusley mi 3hr away.
hopefully in a few months he will get transferred to jackson for that pre release program, Jackson is the only one that has it up and running i think at this time, so that will be cool if he does, then i can visit on week days also!! but iam not going to hold my breath, cuz they do what they want!

my husband is at Mid Michigan Correctional Facility. I live in Flint, MI. I am closest to Thumb Correctional Facility, which is about 30 minutes away from me... Since he is a level 1 and Thumb is a level 2, he won't be going there, even though I wish they would up his level so that I can. It is hard for me to go see him, and it has been a yr since I have seen him, and almost 3 yrs since our children have seen him.

The closest one to me is like 5mins away that said Kris isn't there he is in one 2 hours away

Im in Ionia and surrounded by prisons....which of course my man isnt at. He is 4 1/2 hours away.

I live 15 minutes from Macomb and the closest he's been in the nine moves he's had in 21 months is Cooper and Cotton (which is 2 hours away...dependent on how fast I drive.):D
I'm seeing a pattern that MDOC doesn't give a rats *&%$ about rehabilitation and forming/keeping a family support system for when they come home. :angry:

i'm sure i pass a bunch of prisons on my way to see him, i'm 15 miles east of lapeer and have to go through flint, saginaw and i know there are a few in st louis. he is in pine river in st louis which is 103 miles door to door. i'm wondering though if he is gonna have to do mpri if he is granted parole (on deferral right now) and if so will he end up in tuscola, lapeer or saginaw? he is a level 1 though so who knows. we've given up trying to figure out the mdoc and are just going with the flow lol.

Hvw and hvm are clsoe to me about 20 mins. But my son is in Ionia about 21/2 hrs away.

Kinda new but my hubbs is at Coopers St. in Jackson , moved from Hiawatha to Kinross to here. My ride went from 6 hours to 1 hr and 15 min. NOT COMPLAINING...

I drive about 160 miles or so and there is one that is only about 20 miles or so away. I am not too worried though because he is going to be home soon.

My son is in Milan and we are 10 hours away in Virginia. There are several prisons here but they sent him way the heck out there fo some unGodly reason. Federal Prison System SUCKS!!!!

We are from wisconsin, our son was first put in Louisiana, then transferred to West Virginia, and was supposed to be transferred back to Wisconsin this month. We have quite a few prisons anywhere from an hour to two hours drive from us. Just found out today they are not sending him to Wisconsin, they are sending him to Milan in Michigan. So that is 570 miles from us..we haven't seen him in four years. We will make the trip to Milan when he gets transferred but due to health and money it wont be often, maybe twice a year. I dont understand why they do this to families, when there are so many prisons so close. I personally feel they do their best to make it harder on everyone by transferring them as far away as possible.

My fiance is currently located 421 miles away from me...there is a prison at least 45 minutes from me and there may be one even closer...I drove 8 hours to come visit him and I am staying for his 8 monthly visits...I'm a little disappointed that this prison doesn't even take photos unless it's a special holiday and you have to make special arrangements for it ahead of time...I want a picture with my man so bad...I hear most other prisons do it too...I figure if I'm gonna drive 8 hours I should at least get that!
