View Full Version : reducing time in the fed system
fabulous 04-14-2003, 07:33 AM Does anyone know anything about the programs in the fed system that reduce time? I have heard about the drug program, but i would like to know the details. Are there any other programs? And what about the classes, Do they reduce time?
I believe that the drug program does. I am not sure of the others.
BillnDenise 04-14-2003, 12:38 PM I believe that if you pass the drug program, you can get a year off. However, it depends on the charge. My sweetie can take the program, but since he had a gun charge, he's not eligible for the time off. He's also not eligible for halfway house either. Billy says that the drug program is REALLY hard to pass.
I'm not sure about the other classes. Billy is taking his GED and starting a parenting class in June. He doesn't get time off for those, but he does get a certificate showing that he passed. In the long run it will help him when he gets out.
dragonlady 04-18-2003, 01:24 PM Gee...I would like to know more about this drug program too. Where did you find out about it? Who would provide the info inside?

harncw 04-18-2003, 08:20 PM The residential program is KEY.
Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP)

The regs themselves: http://www.bop.gov/progstat/5330_010.pdf
In summary these programs are only offered at select prisons, and the criteria to get in them are strict. I believe the best way to get into one is to have judge recommend it at sentencing. I think the inmate must have done drugs in the past of year, and not have a history of violence, or gun charges. Also I beleive the sentence must be for 2 or more years to be eligble. There are some prison consultant companies that claim to assist in getting the inmate into these choice programs, they seemed to be pricey though.
A google search of rdap can help you investigate this:

I wish you and yours the best of luck.

fabulous 04-20-2003, 12:46 AM Thanks for the links. I have a hard time getting around on the internet sometimes. So it was very helpful.
pookie 04-20-2003, 11:23 AM Tim took a drug program, but I don't think it was that 500 hour one that knocks off time. Anyways, because Tim had a gun charge, he took the class, but was not given any time off. But I think the program was good for him regardless. Tim has never done drugs, but had an alcohol problem......so I think they look at alcohol problems in the past as a drug problem. Alcohol and or drugs are the same thing in the eyes of the fed system I think. And someone said that a gun charge does not make one eligible for halfway house. I am glad that was said, because I did not know that!! Tim has a gun charge, so I guess halfway house is out huh? Those with gun charges seem to get no kind of breaks.

Sienna's Mom 05-22-2003, 08:56 PM In a so-called effort in the prison system to "rehabilitate", prisoners may earn time off in some institutions, IF they earn their G.E.D., or enter into an approved drug rehab progam. However, in my daughter's case, she was NOT a drug or alcohol user and already had a college degree. So, there are no additional time off rewards for her except for good behavior, which I'm still trying to figure out! So, "Pookie", you are right as far as I know, none of these options are available when a firearm was used in the crime. Unless someone else know something more on this?
westybosm 06-30-2003, 03:26 PM I have a homeboy that just came out of halfway house and his charges were selling guns out of state, he still was eligible for halfway house. I belive all federal inmates are eligible for halfway house when their 6-3 months short. The reason behind this is to get them as close to the community and family as possible.
Does anyone know if that new SB5 applies to federal prison? I believe it says that first time offenders only have to serve 35%, or something like that.
Thanks!
13luvs52 07-08-2003, 02:27 PM whats an sb5??
if any one can tell me i'll appreciate it!!!
any links would be great thanks!!!!
SB5 is sentate bill 5 and, unfortunately, I found out that it is a Missouri state bill.
There are other ways besides (drug programs) to reduce sentence-especially if you contact Before Sentencing...
if you need a referral to someone that helped me , let me know...

David 08-23-2003, 01:07 PM Agar,
Do you have experience with these people or just posting a link?
Zelda50 08-24-2003, 12:01 AM How to get a shorter sentence? You can save a guard's life. Or you can rat on somebody and, even if you're lying, the feds will reward you for it. Of course, you'll have to live with your scummy self the rest of your life...which might turn out to be shorter than you wish. I wouldn't recommend it. Zelda
