A friend of mine has a son that is in prison in Alabama. She is trying to find out about a transfer to Texas for him. She hasn't been able to find out if there is an ombudsman she can talk to so she has written a letter to the Gov., no answer on that yet. Does anyone have any info that may help her out? Who she can talk to, how to get it started, is it even possible? I appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

well, as far as I know....if he is doing STATE time there's not a way. If its federal time I think she can aply for a "hardship" transfer...

I think it is state time. She is in Alabama this weekend visiting him when she gets back next week I will ask her. I do know he got a life sentence. Thanks so much for your reply.

I don't know what to tell you because I have heard two different things about interstate compact transfers. I have heard that there are only six or seven states Alabama does have interstate compact with (and therefore eligible for transfer) and I have heard that there are many more than that. The first place I would go is call either TDCJ or the Alabama DOC and ask to speak to someone who would know the answer to whether there is an interstate compact between those states and, if there is, that person should be able to tell you what to do about how to start proceedings.

The catch about interstate compact is that if Alabama does have an interstate compact with Texas, there has to be an inmate in Texas that wants to transfer to Alabama... so if no one had applied for that you'd be out of luck or at least until someone did and that could take years. But again the first thing to do is find out whether interstate compact transfer is even possible between those two states.
