I'm just posting this for anyone in the future whose loved one is sent to Van Buren County Detention Facility and wants info on it.
It holds about 40-50 people, divided into three or four "pods" of 12-15 people. The phones are run by Evercom, which is outrageously expensive. Phone cards (at least for long distance) are about half the cost of collect calls.
You can send:
*Up to three photos at a time (I think that's the number)
*Books
*Cigarettes
*Letters
*Money orders
You can generally also bring these things on visits to drop off.
Inmates cannot have newspaper subscriptions.
If you send cigarettes, they will be shared with the entire "pod" of people. Each inmate can get two cigarettes per day when they're outside. They generally go outside once per day -- I think it's for about 1/2 an hour. It is also possible to send food, but you must ask the jail administrator and you must provide enough for every inmate in the jail.
Inmates put in their orders for commissary on Sundays and get them on Tuesdays. This means they should have the money for the commissary purchase by Sundays.
Visits are on Saturdays. They last 20 minutes, I think. If you're from very far away you can get a one hour visit. You must call on Thursdays to schedule your visits in advance.
The mailing address is:

It's a PO Box, so books would have to be delivered to the physical location.
