Yesterday, Don Hawkins was killed by the state of Oklahoma. He was a friend to many. I knew him through another death row inmate who was his very good friend. They had known each other for 8 years. They had been through the execution of many of their mutual friends together. The had been cellies for a few years and had talked about their lost hopes and dreams. Don had introduced my friend to the Bible. They went to church twice a month together. Don was an accomplished artist and was the one who did my friends tattoos. When my friend heard about Dons execution date being set, his letter to me was angry, sad, and confused. He loved this man like a brother. I had thought about having Don as a pen pal months ago but felt I didn't have the time, with my other pen pals. I wish I had written him. Now I will never know him like so many others do. I did send him an e-mail through a pen pal sight and told him about my feelings and those of my friend, in case they did not see each other before he was killed. My friend saw Don on Friday and he wanted my friend to thank me for the kind e-mail. I am very touched. Four days before his death and he thinks to thank a stranger for a small note!! This world could use more men like Don. My friend and I shall miss Don very much. I wish I had known him better. God Bless You Don!!! Enjay and Jack
