Meetings Set For Laid-Off Prison Workers
Cuts Result Of Statewide Budget Reductions
Posted: 2:57 p.m. CDT April 9, 2003
HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Letters have been mailed to more than 200 workers within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice whose administrative and recreation supervision jobs will be eliminated by May 15. The prison system is scheduled to hold two informational meetings next week in Huntsville to discuss unemployment benefits, insurance and payroll.
Placement procedures for those wishing to become correctional officers will also be discussed, The Huntsville Item reported Wednesday.
The jobs set for elimination are at units throughout the state, but a majority of the administrative reductions will take place in Huntsville.
More than 120 administrative jobs in Huntsville and Austin will be eliminated as well as 80 recreation programs specialists, who supervise inmates during recreation periods and within the prisons' craft shops, said Carol Blair Johnston, deputy director of TDCJ human resources.
More staff reductions are likely but will not affect parole officers or prison guards, the prison system said.
"We'll be available to answer any questions they have," Johnston said of the meetings set for next Wednesday.
The cuts are the result of a statewide budget reduction required of all state agencies by the Texas Legislature.
