On May 19th, I attended a public forum in Buffalo hosted by Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples and Senator Montgomery from Brooklyn ( Crystal Peoples is from Buffalo). It was held to get feedback from those formely incarcerated and loved ones in reagrds to prison issues, including parole and re-entry. The lawyer that one of you mentioned before Cheryl Kates (not sure if I spelled that right) spoke. She spoke well. There were not as many people there as I would have liked to see, especially women as I believe our voices need to be heard. It was a decent/fair turnout, the stories/testamonies I herad had me reeling....people being violated for missing curfew by 5 minutes, being violated for 14 months...and so on
Anyway, a woman spoke whose husband has been locked up for 42 years, another woman spoke Karima Amin, she is a local storyteller here in Buffalo. She read a written testimony from a a man she is in contact with who has been locked up since 1977, consistently denied parole.
I did not see this forum advertised in the Buffalo paper however it was advertised in the Challenger which is the Black Buffalo newspaper. But really this should have been out there more. I hope to attend more events like these in Buffalo and the surrounding ares if I am able to.

Is there a way we can be informed ahead of time so that there is better turnout, representation, and voice? Do the members on the Correctional Services Committee have a site that we can look for up coming events?

Please post if you find out when and where there will be another meeting such as this. I am in Buffalo and I will be there with bells on.
Thanks so much :)
