View Full Version : donating books Dixie_sweetie 05-25-2005, 04:59 PM I was wondering if I could donate books to prisons and if so how do I go about it. I am not sending them to a certian inmate just to the prison library if i can do so. Thank you all DeniseJ 05-26-2005, 07:47 AM contact the chaplin at the prison of your choice. He is usually the only one that will accept donations of books...good luck wee b 05-26-2005, 10:50 AM I donated several books to Gulf C. I. - Annex in Florida and I spoke to the chaplin and then sent them to him, so I would have to agree with DeniseJ, call the chaplin. Dixie_sweetie 05-26-2005, 03:49 PM Thanks for the help. Now another question, how do I get ahold of the chaplins. I would like to donate to more than one prison. wee b 05-26-2005, 05:28 PM All you have to do is call the prisons that you are interested in donating to and ask for the chaplain and you can find most of the numbers on the DOC website for that state. Good luck! and let me know how it goes. Mrs.J. 05-27-2005, 09:41 AM Be aware though, that most prisons (especially higher levels) will not accept hardback books. They are considered weapons. They also don't like any kind of book featuring gang violence of any type, mofia, drugs, all of it. I am a librarian and have been donating books to the lower levels/honor farms for years. The inmates mostly ask for romance novels and westerns, if you can come up with some of those. Good luck All you have to do is call the prisons that you are interested in donating to and ask for the chaplain and you can find most of the numbers on the DOC website for that state. Good luck! and let me know how it goes. DaddysMama 05-27-2005, 10:02 AM Thank you for that information ... its a great idea and I wasnt even thinking about doing something like this but it caught my eye and opened my heart so im gonna get started... Mrs.J. 05-27-2005, 10:31 AM Kudos to you! It's something the inmates don't get too often and the appreciation is tremendous. I wish I could do more myself. (((HUGS))) Dixie_sweetie 05-27-2005, 02:08 PM Thank you. I was wanting to donate Christian books and study Bibles, thats what my heart is saying to do. But someone told me that prison have a lot of resources availble to them. I just am not sure about that I mean do they really have that many Chirstian books and such? And if anyone knows some prison that need these kind of books let me know and I will look into sending a few to the ones that really need it. Thanks so much for the help. Brandi |
