11-Ounce Baby Dies After Two Weeks
Dakota Guido Delivered 14 Weeks Early
POSTED: 3:33 pm EDT May 25, 2005
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A nearly two-week-long struggle to survive has ended for baby who weighed 11 ounces at birth.
Dakota Guido gained 4 ounces and .25 of an inch in an incubator before dying Saturday at a hospital in Buffalo.
Women and Children's Hospital listed the cause of death as "complications from prematurity."
Doctors delivered the daughter of Ronald and Sahara Guido by Caesarean section on May 9, 14 weeks early. They were worried that the mother's diabetes and high blood pressure had put the baby in danger.
The baby overcome both a leak in one of her heart valves and an infection. Her feisty demeanor gave her parents and doctors hope she would survive.
The smallest baby ever to survive is believed to be an 8.6 ounce girl born in September near Chicago.
