We made the trek up to Susanville this weekend and had a very nice visit with Matt on Saturday and Sunday. I can't say enough nice things about the visiting staff. They were great and helped make it a very pleasant experiance. Both days were beautiful weather wise and we spent most of our time outside on the patio. Here are a few things that we learned about visiting at CCC.

As you enter the visitor parking lot the Friendship House is on the right. You fill out your visit slip and get your number at the friendship house so start there. The Friendship house opens at 7:30 am. We arrived at 7:45 and recieved numbers 19 & 20. They start calling numbers at approximately 8:00 am. When your number is called you walk across the parking lot to the visitor registration building. That is where you pass through the metal detector etc. They have lockers at visitor registration in case you need one. After registration it is a very short van ride over to the visiting building for level 1 & 2 (contact visits). The second stop is for level 3 visits. Depending on the number of people they may have two vans one for 1 & 2 and a second for level 3.

Visiting is from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. However the first inmates didn't get to the visiting room until about 9:00 am. Gates for visitors are every half hour. There is a shift change sometime between 1:30 and 2:30 pm so there is a final gate at 1:15 (none at 1:30 or 2:00) for those visitors that cannot stay until 2:30.

The visiting rules are pretty much the standard ones listed elsewhere on the site ($30.00 per visitor in ones or change, etc). One thing that I haven't seen listed anywhere and everyone should be aware of is that inmates cannot handle money or use the vending machines. They can go over to the machines with you but you must do the purchasing. This is important because a few inmates were written up for was using the machines.

If I can answer any question about Susanville or visiting CCC just give me a shout.

Matt's Dad.

I am so glad that you had a great visit. It's always a good visit anytime we get to see our loved ones, but having helpful visiting staff makes it a more pleasant visiting experience.

Great information on how visiting works at Susanville. It will be very helpful for any newbies to visiting there. Thanks for taking the time to write up such a thorough description of how visiting works there.

Hope you have many more great visits with your son.

Charme:)

Matt's Dad,

It never got crowded (Saturday or Sunday) to the point that anyones visit was cut short. We did stay in Susanville at the Best Western. They have a AAA rate of $68.00 and a free continental breakfast. Not the cheapest but it is clean and nice. We met several other people that were visiting the prison and staying there.

Susanville is 80 miles north of Reno on route 36. You drive route 395 from Reno and just south of town 395 turns off. You continue straight on route 36 into town. At the 395 turnoff you will see the sign for the state prison. If you drive route 395 from Reno after dark (we got to Susanville at 12:30 am) be careful for deer on the road. We saw many deer alongside the road. A CHP officer also warned us about the number of deer along that section of 395.

To get to CCC from Susanville go back south on route 36 to the 395 turnoff, and turn left onto 395. Follow 395 about 3 - 4 miles and you will see the sign state prison left 1/4 mile. Take the next left which is Leavitt Lane. Levitt ends at Center Rd. Turn right on Center Rd. to go to CCC which is on the left. For those people that want to go to HDSP turn left on Center Rd. and HDSP is on the right. The two prisons are right next to each other.

The number of visitors is 5 at a time.

I also wanted to let everyone know that CCC has a visiting phone line. It is manned Tuesday and Thursday from 1 pm to 4 pm. The number is (530) 257-2181 extension 4119. Also on busy days (like in the summer) you may want to arrive a little earlier than we did. A line forms at the end of Levitt Lane where it ends at Center Rd. As I recall you can't get onto the prison grounds until 7:30. When you drive over to the prison with the line there is a guard passing out the visit slips (which also has your number on it). You will still need to go over to the Friendship House to check in and wait until they start calling numbers.

Matt has been at Trinity fire camp since July of last year so it has been a while since we have visited CCC. Hopefully our next visit to CCC will be July 29th to pick him up when he is released. :D I have heard that they are released directly from some of the fire camps but from Trinity they send them back to CCC for release.
