I'm thinking of moving all of my plants out of their cheap plastic containers into nice, decorative terra cotta pots. I've never painted on terra cotta before, and I know it is really pourous. Is there a special primer you need to put down first? Do you have to use different kind of paint on it? I usually paint in the small bottles of craft paint available at all craft stores. Do you need to seal it with something afterward?

Just wondering. Thought I'd ask before jumping in and making mistakes.

Thanks!
Caryn ;)

Red, I have painted hundreds of pots...I use a regular primer sealer (i.e. Kilz), let it dry thoroughly, and use the same craft paints you mentioned.

I'd have to say Delta's ceramcoat is my favorite, for durability and selection.

When you're done painting, use a spray sealer to finish it off.

I do as Susan - use Kilz or just a couple of coats of white paint as well.

I also bring my pots inside every winter and spray them again in the spring before setting them back out!

have fun!
