Great pics, Susan. I wish I could've been there...but, I think I would've cried like a baby. :( Those isolation cells are so small...and well, it's just depressing.

why don't they use this place as a prison anymore. doesn't look that different from prisons now

It was closed back in the 60s, during (I believe) the Kennedy administration. It was replaced by the Supermax at Marion, Illinois, which was augmented by the Supermax at Florenece, Colorado, which . . .

p.s.: I visited there a few years ago. As those of you who have toured The Rock know, they rent you a Walkman with a taped tour of the place.

So, everybody was wearing headphones, wandering around from place to place in response to the voice that only they could hear. Talk about blank looks on people's faces! It looked very much like one of the back wards in a state mental hospital, full of folks responding to internal stimuli.
