Friends,
Today was the first Saturday of our May protests of inhumane conditions at Polunsky Unit in Livingston, Texas. Many people are concerned about the situation at Polunsky, which includeds isolation cells, social and sleep deprivation, no television, substandard food, excessive gassings and use of force, hostile, uncaring and sometimes sadistic guards and all the other issues large and small we have been lamenting. People are outraged that TDCJ marches ahead with ever more restrictive policies, and are wondering what we can do to bring about change.
Today, 17 people cared enough about this tragic situation to show up at the protest. Many many people have contacted me and urged that we organize a protest on the weekend so that people who have weekday commitments can participate. These 17 people sacrificed their time and effort and some came a great distance to be there. It was very hot, but the issues are important, so no one complained. It is very hard for me to understand why more people were not standing there with us. Some people who support our protests and are very concerned about these issues chose to visit prisoners rather than standing with us?????? I just don't understand. What does it take to get 100 people standing in front of that building?
The good news is that most of the people going into Polunsky and a few passers by stopped and took our literature. Some wanted several to take back to churches or other destinations. I have been told that some groups will be coming from a great distance next week. It will be good to have a good showing on that Saturday that coincides with the large protest that will be taking place in France.
This is something we need to do. Just like attending execution vigils/protests are things we need to do. Not fun, but necessary. Please take this to heart. I'm sorry to complain. I appreciate everyone who was standing there dripping today, but 17 people cannot get the job done.
For future reference:
The protests are every Saturday in May in front of Polunsky Unit 3:30 to 5:30. Polunsky is VERY visable, about 3-5 miles south of Highway 190 on FM 350 South. This turnoff is about a quarter of a mile or less west of Highway 59. Please, try to work this into your schedule.
Thank you,
Nancy
