State Prison Guard Fired After Inmate's Death
APRIL 22, 2005
WRIGHTSVILLE, AR - A guard at the state prison system's Wrightsville Unit has been fired after the death of an inmate in February.
Prison officials say 28-year-old Victor Wright complained of not feeling well after returning from a work detail and went to the infirmary, where he collapsed and died.
Prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler said a sergeant who led the work detail did not provide adequate water breaks and hurried the convicts back from the fields. The prisoners had been clearing weeds and chopping grass. Tyler said the sergeant violated regulations and then lied about his violations when questioned.
The sergeant was not named because he has until Tuesday to appeal his dismissal.
