Inmate dies from prison melee

ADELANTO A 37-year-old inmate of the Victorville Federal Penitentiary died Saturday night, apparently from injuries sustained during an altercation five days earlier involving several inmates, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office.

The man's name is not being released until relatives are notified.

The man died at 6:02 p.m. at the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, the coroner said. He was involved in a fight April 11 with several others, according to the coroner. The FBI is investigating.

His death comes during a period of heightened security at the penitentiary, located at 13777 Air Expressway. In November, 622 inmates housed in one of the three main facilities of the penitentiary were locked down, given only limited time outside of their cells. In a written statement issued last year, prison officials said the lockdown was for security reasons and would continue for an undetermined period of time.

It is unclear in which of the prison's several facilities the man who died Saturday was being held.

According to the latest figures available from the Bureau of Prisons the federal prison complex houses 2,923 inmates.

Most of the inmates, 26 percent, are drug offenders; 24.3 percent are being held on robbery offenses; and 18.6 percent are jailed for violations regarding weapons, explosives or arson, according to the Bureau of Prisons.

P.S. the inmate who died was from Victorville USP

My husbands best friend was sent their from Lompoc. A lot of the inmates at USP Victorville are from Lompoc. Things are so bad that they are refusing to take any more inmates from USP Lompoc.

It was a fight between whites and hispanics; with the 'main' fight involving only about 6 inmates. The one inmate who died received multiple stab wounds to his upper chest. 2 other inmates were seriously injured although their injuries are not life threatening.

Penitentiary officials reveal killed prisoner's identity

VICTORVILLE Federal officials at the United States Penitentiary in Victorville identified the inmate that died Saturday at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center as Peter Steven Scopazzi.

Scopazzi, 37, died "as a result of stab wounds," said Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for FBI's Los Angeles office. He was involved in a fight with five other inmates at the Victorville prison on April 11, federal officials said.

A second inmate was also hospitalized for his injuries, said Selma Garcia, spokeswoman for the USP Victorville.

Scopazzi was sentenced in the Southern District Court of Florida and was serving a 170 month sentence for possession of five grams or more of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm, federal officials said.

The FBI is investigating.
