Firefighters were working to contain a brush fire burning several miles from the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis that started Saturday afternoon.

The fire was first reported around 1:30 p.m. and had grown to around 200 acres within hours, said Buckeye Valley Fire District spokesman Mike Linderman.

Linderman said the fire was burning low-level grass and shrub.

"It can't get real high but it can run real fast," he said, adding that two single-engine air tankers were making drops to help suppress the flames.

Firefighters had a line around 75 percent of the blaze by 3 p.m., Linderman said.

The fire was burning to the east of the prison and wasn't anticipated to change direction. No trigger point for prison evacuations had been established, he said.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.

Brush fire breaks out in Buckeye near prison

BUCKEYE - A brush fire spread over nearly 300 acres a few miles from the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis in Buckeye on Saturday.

Mike Linderman, Buckeye Valley Fire District spokesman, said the fire probably started close to Old U.S. 80 and was reported at 1:30 p.m.

By 4:30 p.m., most of the fire had been contained, and no homes were threatened as desert brush and low-level grass burned for more than three hours, Linderman said.

About 30 firefighters worked to put out the flames, and at least two single-engine air tankers were used to help put out the fire.

Linderman said there is no known cause for the fire.
