Firefighters were working to contain a brush fire burning several miles from the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis that started Saturday afternoon.
The fire was first reported around 1:30 p.m. and had grown to around 200 acres within hours, said Buckeye Valley Fire District spokesman Mike Linderman.
Linderman said the fire was burning low-level grass and shrub.
"It can't get real high but it can run real fast," he said, adding that two single-engine air tankers were making drops to help suppress the flames.
Firefighters had a line around 75 percent of the blaze by 3 p.m., Linderman said.
The fire was burning to the east of the prison and wasn't anticipated to change direction. No trigger point for prison evacuations had been established, he said.
The cause of the fire was being investigated.
